Sure i'm grateful for what she gives and i will accept it, but it kinda reminds me of when a grandmother is trying to by clothes for her Granddaughter, it just doesn't work.
I'm in my early 20s, so here's my opinion:

While your idea for decorating is not anything I'd do myself, I would think its pretty normal for a college-aged guy. As long as a place is neat and CLEAN (boyfriend's apartment was always filthy) most girls don't have a problem. And, I'm the kind of girl that's much more impressed by a PS2 and a big screen than velvet couches and columns.

As for your mom's idea, frankly, I think it sounds tacky and garish. It sounds more like a funeral home or brothel than a man's apartment. Maybe she's trying to get you a much much much older woman - with a healthy bank account?

While its nice to have people give you things, I know I'd much rather someplace done in "early everybody" that reflected me and my style than to have somebody give me something I absolutely hated.

Whoa!

I don't think parents should be buying their kids places to live ... I mean, once you're on your own, you can buy your own house or condo, but until then, why *own* a place? Whatever happened to renting? However, that's my two cents, I'm pretty sure you don't care what I think on that, and that's not what you asked!

But the deal is - if they're buying the place, they can do what they want to do. If you're going to take the favor, ya gotta put up with the ugly doodads and columns and velvet cushions and crap.

Umm...you had me up 'til this. This just sounds UGLY.

Why not get a framed picture of Bobby Bowden, and headlines of FSU's undefeated National Championship season? SO much more appealing!

First, Unless your Linda Richmond from Saturday Night Live, or Staten Island trash, have her leave the columns at home. I wouldnt want them either. They do look gay. Unless you're trying to open your own italian resturaunt in your living room, then they're fine.

Tell her you appreciate her help, but you are afraid that if she busts out some coin, the stuff she buys might get ruined. Youd rather have her get stuff for you after you graduate, thereby buying you some time.

If thats not an option, or If you are worried about what she will get you, go with her to the furniture store and pick out the stuff you like. Theres cool stuff out there. Thats what I did when my mom threatened to decorate my place. A day at the furniture store wasnt my idea of fun, but I did get some cool stuff outta it.

Best of luck bro

It actually makes much more sense to buy a place than to rent, if you're going to be there for more than 2 years. (There are tax issues if you buy and sell before you've owned the property 2 years). Rent is money you never get back. When you pay a mortgage, you're building equity in the property. Real estate is an investment that usually increases in value. Especially if its in an in-demand area.

Trust me.... it is not the Cayman Islands!

Then again, I live in Connecticut which is the smallest state (next to Rhode Island) but produces the biggest bi_ches you've ever seen! Pike Man- they'd destroy your mom's decor ideas but like most- if your parents have purchased you 5 places to live and you are not 25 yet.... you are def. rich and def. spoiled. Love it... don't complain about it.

You're not bad, UF_PikePC98! I am glad that you are going to Law/Politics! Hopefully, you will have a kicking apartment! What a babe magnet you are..LOL!

Pike, baby..... Please, tell her to hold off on the columns & red velvet couches! In all honesty, I'd be extremely frightened to walk into a young man's home & feel like I just stepped into a Victoria's Secret boutique.

Your ideas sound much more like the "typical" college guy's decorative strategy (once they've moved past the alcohol paraphenalia stage). However, if you'd still like to have an ultra-classy pad, consider telling your mother that while you're really excited about having her help you out, that your taste runs more along the lines of a gentleman's library, study or billiard room. Think leather/nailhead couches & chairs, lots of dark, substantial wooden pieces, continue the marble theme with marble-topped tables, lots of bookshelves......... just an example.

XO_Sue---"Then again, I live in Connecticut which is the smallest state ."

Hey, are you from hartford? One of my best friends is from there, His name is D. Jorgeson and he plays football for UF. Hartford isn't that big so I thought maybe you might have went to highschool with him, if you are from there.

EagleChick19-- Mad props baby, mad props!

AggieDZ, You see the thing is, I don't want to hurt my mothers feelings. She is a very sensitive woman and when my dad, brother or myself tell her we don't think her ideas are the best, she gets sad thinking none of us want her help. You see I'm her "first born" and so when I try to keep her out of certain things in my life it hurts her. Take shopping for example, it took me FOREVER to get her to quit buying me clothes on her on and constantly picking things out for me. Today she still does it sometimes but far less than in the past. Nowadays when we go shopping I spend more time with her ( Thats how we spend time when i'm home.) I'll put it in her words when she tells my dad what were doing, " We're shopping till we drop." She's a sweet lady and sometimes she takes things the wrong way when a statement is made verbally or non-verbally. I guess I'll let her do her own thing and if it looks Gay, I'll put the stuff in a storage unit. Besides, rarely do my parents like coming up to North/central florida, they think there are too many red-necks up here and don't like dealing with them. The only reason they normally would come to G-ville is for some of the BIG UF games.

Staten Island is one of the five boroughs of New York City. People always pick on Staten Island for no reason. No, it's not the Cayman Islands , but many good, decent, hard working people live there.

UF_Pike, I'm seeing a whole new side to you. Let your mom have fun shopping for you. Try to steer her in the direction of your tastes. She seems really generous to do all of this for you. I think that she just wants you to be happy. If you hate the couch and marble columns, give it time before you put it in storage. A few years ago my mother bought a table and chairs for me that I thought that I would hate, but now I really like them. Maybe you will have the same reaction.
