I've seen "switching" done in a more positive light. First of all there are ground rules regarding being disrespectful. It is a weekend of activities - on Friday during the day, the "XYZ for a day" has to perform a community service project which the group they are switching typically performs - that evening there is a unity dinner and social where only the greek orgs watch a "performance" by the other org - on Saturday there was a group car wash as a fundraiser which everyone performed and then a step show where the groups performed their own steps with a "moment" for the group they switched off as. The t-shirts worn during the community service project and car was were white with the "AKA for a day" or "DST for a day" printed in black for all organizations and then on the back there was a unity message. Groups wore their own attire for the step show (of course those shirts were a little "tart" by then). My guess is that the "switch" events which have gotten out of hand may have spun off from something that was once positive.

Re: Re: Re: Greek Switch Day???Would you do it??

This type of activity is seen as a positive tribute. This is FAR from the mess questioned in the beginning of the thread.

For each organization, they did a signature step of that organization and then incorporated all of them into a final step. All of the ladies present were pleased and flattered. it was done in fun and was very classy.

Heck naw. To each his own, but something like this on my campus would be a straight up disaster. There's not a lot of disrespect between organizations as a whole, but y'all know that mess would get personal (people acting as INDIVIDUALS in other orgs, not the stereotype as a whole). Does that make sense? At any rate, I don't really see what good could come of it.. maybe I'm missing the point.

wow, just when i thought i had heard it all, i get hit w/this crap. this is an absolutely terrible idea, which only perpetuates some of the existing stereotypes about greek organizations as a whole and individually. like the previous post mentioned, i don't see any good coming out of it.

UH...Hell Naw!

I pledged DST for a reason....I don't ever want to "switch", if only for a day. I think people would take the switching too far and every stereotype out there would be perpetuated.

Re: re: stereotypes of Delta

I have no problem with those stereotypes!!!! Even though I have a perm and not dark-skinned, the last two definitely apply!!!

-being more "earthy", "natural" sistas (i.e. no perms, braids/fro/dreds)

-being darkskinned

-being book smart

-being politically involved

I don't believe this would be a negative experience if the rules and boundaries are set up in the beginning. To say that you won't wear another organizations colors is down-right ridiculous. Just because you belong to XYZ with such and such colors and to not where them because you belong to DEF is crazy to me. I luv the organization that I want to join, but being that I am not a member, I will not be limited to wearing or not wearing their colors or the colors of another organization. Beside that, if and when I do obtain membership my closet will not be limited to my organization of choice colors. On another note, back to the topic at hand, if greek unity is being emphasized, this seems like a positive way to break the ice, as well as get members in their particular organization to learn about the others and present that info in a positive manner. Everything isn't necessarily out to be negative or produce stereotypes.

nah, I'm cool with my crimson and cream...

I do not feel that there is any need to start switching colors and acting as if I was a member of XYZ organization when I know dag on well that I am a member of DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. and have wanted to be since I was 5. It's not all about the COLORS, shoot bloods and crypts wear colors!!! It's about the sisterhood, service and scholarship principles that DST was built on that make me so proud. If your not a DELTA i don't want you in my colors actin' like you are. I would think members of other BGLOs feel the same way!

In terms of greek unity, my best-friend who I have know since high school, before either one of us entered college (we went to the same college too) is an AKA. I love her to death. We use to say we where twins growing up, but she choose AKA and I choose DST, our friendship is just as strong. That's greek unity. I would never disrespect her by putting on her colors and going out there acting like i was in her organization. Besides based on those stereotype she should have been a Delta, lol! She's a dark skinned sister, always in braids and she's a rocket scientist for pete's sake!

Anywho... as stated in previous post, this type of event will not build unity, it will cause disharmony in my opinion. And disharmony between GBLOs will futher tarnish the image of black greeks in the community.

I say do some public service event together, throw a party together or something of that nature.

Hey my Greek Peeps, it's been awhile since I last posted but I really wanted to way in on this one. All I have to say is, WTF! Hello, where are the advisors of the chapters? Maybe they have advisors that don't care, but if I were an advisor of a Kappa chapter and they wanted to participate in some "crap" (trying my best to be good) like this, I would say hell no. To me this is an abomination to the oath and principles I hold dear. We as Greeks, must be mindful of things that we know are not what are founders intended. Any sort of swap can not be good. Also on the subject of paying tribute to an org., I think it's okay but I hate to see when they incorporate hand signs, calls, and other such things. In paying tribute to other orgs. I think that there is a fine line that is sometime crossed. That's all I have to say, and I'm out!

Mock Stepshows

If your school has mock stepshow are there any guidelines, as far as, paraphernalia?

Could someone imitating your organization wear real store bought paraphernalia or would you prefer that they make their own homemade shirts?

Down here on our campus. The Greeks imitate each other in a mock stepshow during Greek Week. Last night it was:

Kappas imitating Zetas
Zetas imitating Kappas
Sigmas imitating Deltas
Deltas imitating Alphas
Alphas imitating SGRHO
SGRHO imitating Omegas
Omegas imitating AKAs
AKAs imitiating Sigmas

Thanks for the clarification. I've never been to a mock stepshow before. How did they decide which org would imitate which org?
