Greek Switch Day???Would you do it??
Hi Sorors and Sisterfriends,
This question is MAINLY directed toward members of all greek- lettered orgs BUT anyone can feel free to respond. Here lately, I have seen several schools participate in an event know as "Switch Day" On this day, each organization acts as another organization. This is suppose to be all in fun but I can't seem to find the punchline if you know what I mean. For the record, I am TOTALLY against it. I've heard all the convo's about UNITY and the like. But I think this takes it too far! How do you feel about this event? Would you EVER participate? Note: Other org's do not wear your symbols-- they just wear your colors. And they are allowed to "act" like your org. I think this just leads to MORE stereotypes and disrespect. |
Hot Mess
Soror are they doing this at your school?
My reply overall: http://www.louisville.edu/~ejbrow01/eek2.gif http://www.louisville.edu/~ejbrow01/thumbsdown.gif http://www.louisville.edu/~ejbrow01/wtf.gif My reason for NOT doing this is -- it does not build up Greek Unity, instead it will lead to petty perpetuation of Greek Stereotypes and that will cause friction. I am all for GREEK UNITY but I would rather do a service project or co sponsor a speaker or something on that note, but to dress in the colors of AKA, Zeta or S G Rho just does not float my boat. That is more of a way to "jest" @ orgs and not say "We Support You". On another note: There are stereotypes for every org but REALLY what is the STEREOTYPE for DELTAS?? I am dead dang on serious. I mean what is "OUR HANGUP"?? |
What a bad, bad idea!
Can you IMAGINE the kind of drama that would cause? THe amount of "ha ha that is so funny that I think I will remember that next time y'all have a line/event"???? What are they thinking? Would I participate? Umm, no. I can't see any good reason for it whatsoever. |

My thing is this: WHAT IS THE PURPOSE? WHAT ARE YOU SHOWING THE CAMPUS ABOUT GREEK LIFE? WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO LEARN FROM THIS EVENT? This whole event will go down in history as " Remember that day when ABC dissed XYZ on "Switch Day". And yes, this event will take place at my school. I just think we are all adults and could have come up with something better than this. Sure, alot of us voted AGAINST having a "Switch Day". But majority rules...and the majority thought it would be funny and cool to do this. I agree with Soror CrimsonTide4, I would much rather have done a community service project or co-sponsored a speaker. I ADAMENTLY REFUSE TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS EVENT. I JUST WON'T DO IT. |
To quote my Sister in Greekdom, CT4, WTF???
Now this sounds like something that predominately white greek orgs would do. I can't imagine, not for one second, that any right-minded Divine Nine org would condone some craziness like that. Why in the world would I want to be a Delta, Zeta or SGRho for a day. Absoultely NO DISRESPECT INTENDED. Nor can I imagine why any Delta, Zeta or SGRho would want to be an AKA for a day. This is what sets Divine Nine orgs apart from all the rest...we're about BUSINESS...community service, leadership, action...not about playing "DRESS UP". |
Actually, I've seen a video tape of another school (can't recall where) that also has a "switch day". They incorporate stepping, etc. The difference was that fraternities switch with sororities and vice versa (for example, I think the Omegas mimicked Zeta and the Zetas mimicked the Omegas).
It was quite funny, but in a mean-spirited sort of way—and certainly less funny if it was your group getting the worst of it. Of course, I'm sure there were hurt feelings generally afterward. I recall the fraternities really doing a number of the Sororities particularly, (I recall the AKAs getting a partiularly mean mimick). I understand they were "hot" after the performance (and understandably so). I also recall a sorority doing a real number on Sigma. I certainly can't imagine that this type of event builds ANY sort of NPHC or Greek unity on the campus--in fact, it probably really built underlying hostility throughout the year on the yard. |
re: stereotypes of Delta
no disrespect intended, however there are stereotypes of all the divine 9, here are some that some may perceive of DST, however we all know that stereotypes, whether positive or negative, are not gospel
-being more "earthy", "natural" sistas (i.e. no perms, braids/fro/dreds) -being darkskinned -being book smart -being politically involved |

If a non-greek (but an observer with LOT of respect :D ) may weigh in; the closest I've seen to a "Switch Day is when some of the organizations pay tribute to other organizations by doing their steps in a step show. Usually it is done with class and the REAL members of that organization do their call after or during that performance. If I were ever fortunate enough to be in a BGLO organization; I would have to say no, I would not participate. My top three reasons why are as follows: 3. I don't know if I can picture a guy doing a sorority's call... I don't think most guys have voices that hit that high. 2. Imagine doing this and you meet all of the "sister"friends of the particular organization you are supposedly "switching" with? It completely throws discretion and adds confussion 1. On the subject of "sister"friends, one might think that if a member of a BGLO got to switch and be an organization for a day; then that will mean that if I don't make my first BGLO of choice, I should be allowed to move on to my second ** That's all I can think of. If the post is deemed disrespectful, I will delete it as that is not my intent. 112 **For the record, I for on only have ONE path; but being on this side, I have seen with my own two eyes people who have tried to go one way... but when they didn't make it they went another   |
Hello Greek sisters...
No. I think it's a bad idea for all of the already mentioned reasons.
|
I saw something like this....
The other day I was reading an article which directed me to stepshow.com. The site allows the consumer to see pics of the content of the video. I clicked on one that read "Unity Day" or something like that. When I was looking at the pics, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I have seen white Sigmas and Zetas but never an Omega. Well, when I read further it was the a Unity stepshow which included the members of WGLOs so all the BGLOs had WGLO members on their step team performing. If I did not have my reservations about the quality of the videos from this site I might be interested to see the video!

This is a BAD IDEA:mad: Honestly, they SHOULD be concentrating on PUBLIC SERVICE and SCHOLARSHIP! I'm all for having fun, but what good could POSSIBLY come from stereotyping other greek orgs!? Don't people have better things to do with their time?! The irony is, these would be the SAME PEOPLE, who would complain when people join their org for SUPERFICIAL REASONS BASED ON STEREOTYPES!!! ....And haven't we learned ANYTHING from the Auburn incident? Isn't this the same thing?...but with a "different" face? |
