We had a couple softball players and a member of the track team. Both of these sports lend themselves pretty well to sorority life because they are spring/summer sports. They were not allowed to play intramural sports, but as far as I could tell that was the only way it interfered with their membership.

My first Lil Sis was a scholarship softball player. She quit AOII about a month into the spring semester. She couldn't handle the practices, travel, school AND AOII. Softball paid for school so AOII was the activity that had to go. As everyone said, it depends on the sport, the school and the athlete. It doesn't always work out.

Depends on the season of the sport in question, when formal recruitment and the new member program takes place, and (in the case where the sports season and the NM period are concurrent) how lenient your coach is and how flexible your NM educator is.
I pledged in the fall of my freshman year. I then ran track that spring. I never had a conflict. If there had been a sorority obligation that came up during practice time, my coach probably would have just said "go take a jog on your own time". I don't know what I would have done if it were go to chapter vs. go to a meet, but fortunately the situation never arose.

sometimes coaches don't want "their" athletes to participate in greek life and will not allow them to do so. If you are thinking of trying to do both, definitely check with the coaches as you make official visits.

Good grief. I was looking for the sorority since I've never heard of it.

Don't pretend it was just an innocent post. You posted a link to her 'whatever' page, then followed it up with a snarky comment. What you originally posted had nothing to do with researching a sorority with which you're unfamiliar. If you're gonna have the gall to iStalk, at least have to gall to be honest about it.

We had a few women who were on the track team (Division I recruits), and the other groups on campus definitely had representation from other sports. The major difference with my school is that we didn't provide athletic scholarships so the teams didn't "own" their athletes.
There were, however, a few sports that did not have any Greek representation because of the rigor of the teams (these were NCAA DI championship teams), and because they were pretty tight-knit in and of themselves.

I admit it. I googled the phrases/organizations posted in the signature of a member posting in this thread, who said that members of her sorority are almost all "dancers and cheerleaders.
It seemed odd to me, because the sorority name isn't familiar, the poster claimed to be 25 and a member of a sorority, living in Germany. I was interested to find out what these sorority/dance/cheerleading group(s) were about, so when I found ONE thing that mentioned it, I posted the public link that mentioned the sorority/dance/cheerleaders referenced in the Poster's signature.
Many people here question the authenticity of people who come here, accusing people of creating socks, not being truthful, or simply discussing the improbabilities of a person's story.
My snarky comment was "But of course!" I made it because it seemed very similar to people claiming to be greek and making blogs/forums/etc. describing themselves in tantalizing cliched language -"blond/thin/cheerleader/perfect body 18-year-olds in a sorority."
I get it. Mea culpa. Wrist slapped.
And what is this "iStalking"?? Is posting ONE (the only) LINK that I found in ONE SEARCH of an organization listed in someone's signature - which people put up willingly to share their affiliations - really STALKING? There's a huge different between that and true stalking. Am I truly "stalking" here?
I guess we can't move on, because even after I took it down and asked the poster to do the same, and several others people have already scolded me, people are still talking about it four hours later.

We can and will move on.
I missed all of this so I do not know what you posted.
I will just generally say that there is a difference between posting information to identify a GLO versus posting information to identify a person. It can be even more sketchy when identifying the GLO is also identifying a person (i.e. newly founded GLOs, small GLOs, something in particular about the person and the GLO).
That is why when I post an external link I make sure it is nothing that can haunt a GCer. I remember one time where I thought I was finding a newbie's chapter link to call the chapter out on something. First of all, I had the wrong chapter. God forbid if I had tried to identify the actual person behind the username. Thank goodness I have always sucked at that type of cyberstuff.

Yes. Didn't we just have this discussion on a recent thread? One that magically disappeared?

Well, CeCe, I don't see why you didn't just ask your mother.
I personally played tennis for two years while being in a sorority. A couple of my sisters were cheerleaders and golden girls and there was also an gymnast or two. I think we had two soccer players when I was a freshman.
But you didn't ask me, so I won't tell you!
