I know the OP is planning on going through COR, but the judging a book by the cover thing is still going to happen there, particularly if you don't know a lot of the members personally by the time the first parties roll around.
It's not that sorority members are ALL superficial there, it's just that there's not enough time in a recruitment setting to go deeper than the "what's your major, what are your hobbies" kind of conversation.
Although I'm sure at least a handful of sorority members at the OP's school will know a little bit about her given her posting history on GC.

Use of the word DUH always reminds me of this moment in my favorite movie:

since you have shared so much information about yourself on greekchat, it would probably be best that you NOT list your cousin's affiliation on your recruitment enrollment form. people might be able to figure out who you are and read your posts and they don't present you in your best light.
atrainer, legacies just don't matter as much as they used to, so i wouldn't worry so much about not being a legacy. usually it only gets you back to the 2nd round of parties during formal recruitment. informal recruitment is a whole 'nother ball game, and being a legacy is no big deal-other than the fact the sorority might think that they have an edge over the other chapters . sororities don't have to ask you back.
we do hope that you do well in recruitment-we are just trying to help you not shoot yourself in the foot.

Ditto.
How did I miss this?
AOIIAngel - you've been looking at too many films.
Gusteau & Barbie's_Rush - congratulations on your upcoming nuptials. I'd be upset (I thought Gusteau was sort of sweet on me since he'd been posting all those opal badges on another thread) but I have sworn off marriage forever so I'm not really jealous. Really.
In closing: oh my. my my my.

I suppose this wouldn't be the best time to show off that engagement ring made with fire opals culled from antique badges, right?

Schools do not have legacy policies. GLOs (may) have legacy policies, which vary from organization to organization.
Are you maybe confusing legacy with alumna? Your cousin is an alumna. Younger women within a prescribed degree of kinship to her -- like sister, daughter or granddaughter -- might be legacies.

I am being extremely open-minded about informal recruitment.
Also, my cousin's sorority at my school has an ex-roomie who I didn't get along with and still really don't. Any advice how to deal with that? I am afraid she might try to get the girls to turn on me (since we all know how girls can be at times). I figure I'd just try to ignore her, but be polite to her if I do see her.
|
Define "didn't get along". If you make it an issue, and talk about it, then other people will think it's a big deal. When I rushed, I thought that a disagreement I had had in high school over a boy with an active sister would cause them to cut me. She ended up being the person who delivered my bid card (I COBed), and it turned out that she didn't even remember the incident.

What does "technically" mean in your circumstance? I would check the national web site of the particular sorority to see what they count as legacy status.
