Because many Disney characters are from fairy tales and stories that are hundreds of years old. They weren't created in the past 20 years.

I just looked at this again:

Not that I disagree about the greatness (or at least uniqueness) of the character, but I thought this was only TV and film? Did I miss when this book got made into a movie?
