Not according to me or the critics. People are expecting this to be the best foreign film of the year.
This is the first message board that I've even seen more people saying that they don't like it, than saying that they loved it.

I have to admit. I laughed when I saw the aliens (who looked just like that alien dancing with Will Smith in the "Men in Black" video) wearing pants that were too small for them. And the alien wearing the sports bra? Hilarious! lol lol and let's not forget about the cat food. "Purina cat chow..chow, chow, chow". lol

Saw this movie Friday night - I thought the story was excellent (kstar is right about the Apartheid parallel). The violence was a bit too much for me in places, and the language was atrocious, but as a whole, I thought the movie was solid. Undoubtedly one of the best movies this summer, IMO.

I saw this movie and I thought that it had the potential to be great. However, the satirical aspects of the movie (alien wearing a pink bra, phrases like "sign here that you understand the eviction notice") really cheapened it.
I thought it was pretty good, but the cheap, satire parts really undermined what could have been a much better film.
PS I have been to South Africa, including the township of Soweto, and let's just say, I don't think they needed to build any sets to shoot these movie.
There were elements as allegory not only to apartheid, but also colonialism / WWII (i.e. ghetto'izing a population deemed to be undesirable by moving them to a ghette or "reserve", medical experiements, etc.).

Umm.. the setting of district 9 was not a built set. It was a recently abandoned ghetto that people actually lived in. I thought the movie was great. I really enjoyed it.
