Beta Theta Pi, Penn State (RM violations, etc.)

http://www.betathetapi.org/news/news...tate-disbanded

Excerpt from news release above ^

The Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity has been disbanded by the General Fraternity effective February 19, 2009. . . . due to repeated violations of the Fraternity’s risk management policies by the Chapter and disregard for previously imposed sanctions placed upon its membership.

It's a maybe. Since their HQ, nor the chapter has released a definitive statement regarding their charter, I'm going to leave it alone. It's pretty common with (some) fraternities to lose school recognition but keep their charters.

For a small group like this which probably relies on the income produced by this chapter to fund the national programs, they simply can't afford to revoke the charter.

The Alpha Tau Omega chapter at the University of Missouri was closed this past January for RMF.

As I previously posted here: http://www.greekchat.com/gcforums/sh...d.php?t=104014

ADG has been taken off the active chapter list from nationals web site. http://www.alphadeltagamma.org/actives/chapters.html

I think we can 100% say the charter was pulled.

Edit: Forgot to add this is at Loyola Chicago

Delta Upsilon Is Closing Its Penn State Chapter

Hey Kevin:

Sad news, but on the bright side, it seems there's a possibility of a fall 2010 return:

DU is closing its chapter at Penn State:

http://www.centredaily.com/tilc/story/1424018.html

(I also notified Lane Sig for his thread about colonies, closures, etc.)

Hey Kevin:

For the list of closures due to risk management problems (hazing, etc., etc.) in 2009:

Delta Sigma Phi closed its chapter at Wittenberg in March 2009:

http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/ne...048.html?imw=Y

Excerpt:

Hazing incidents at Wittenberg University have resulted in the closing of a fraternity and sanctions levied against a sorority.

National representatives of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity closed the chapter on March 23 after it determined “serious hazing incidents that put our students at risk both mentally and physically,” said Sarah Kelly, Wittenberg’s vice president of student development and dean of students. The chapter has 23 members, eight of whom will graduate next month. It will remain closed until the fall of 2012, giving the chapter a chance to “recolonize” and gather a strong alumni, Kelly said.

The week prior, national representatives of the Chi Omega sorority joined the university in levying sanctions against its local chapter due to hazing.
The [Chi Omega] chapter was re-organized and will remain active, said Casey Stevens, Wittenberg’s director of Greek life. . . .

I'm not sure of the details, but on the radio this morning they mentioned something about the ATO house at IU. If I heard correctly, all but 20 of the members either had their membership revoked or they were put on alumni status.

A good friend of ours is an ATO from IU, but he has been alum for many years, so I doubt he would know more. Sad.

Delta Zeta at Virginia Tech

Per an email to Panhellenic Advisors from the VT Sorority Advisor:

"I regret to inform you that the Kappa Theta Chapter of Delta Zeta Sorority has been found responsible for violations of university policies. As a result of these violations and previous sanctions, Delta Zeta has lost recognition at Virginia Tech. Due to this loss of recognition the Delta Zeta National Board has removed the charter of the chapter at Virginia Tech."

Thumbs down

That's a bad loss for Delta Zeta. They were the first chapter installed at Virginia Tech.

Kevin:
A "suspension," I guess you'd call it -- Pi Kappa Phi at U of Georgia -- following investigations spurred by an anonymous letter:

See
http://www.ajc.com/news/uga-s-pi-kappa-396458.html

Excerpts from Atlanta Journal Constitution report:

Metro Atlanta / State News 1:46 p.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2010 UGA's Pi Kappa Phi suspended .By Kristi E. Swartz

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

All activities at the University of Georgia’s Pi Kappa Phi fraternity are suspended through Jan. 1, 2011, as part of several hazing-related sanctions handed down from the Office of Judicial Programs.

.Also, fraternity members -- with the exception of the fall 2009 pledge class -- will not be able to participate in Pi Kappa Phi, and no new pledges may join, according to an informal resolution agreement obtained earlier this week by the Red and Black, the campus daily newspaper.

According to the document, Pi Kappa last Friday accepted the sanctions, which allow the fraternity to operate again after Jan. 1 next year, but it must follow certain restrictions until May 15.

University officials did not immediately return phone calls.

UGA last month suspended the fraternity because of allegations of pledge paddling -- the extent of which was in question after an investigation by Pi Kappa Phi's national office.

The university's informal agreement -- the result of a separate investigation -- states that the fraternity "violated published policies when the organization condoned the hazing of new members. It is alleged that members of the organization physically abused new members and those actions disrupted the academic pursuit, rights, and/or privacy of other individuals."

. . . The list of nine sanctions, signed by Pi Kappa Phi chapter president Brent Stringer and UGA Assistant Dean of Students Brandon Frye -- bans the fraternity from holding any social events where alcohol is available. It also said the chapter must recruit, hire and train an adviser who will live in the fraternity house.

Phi Kappa Sigma Suspended at Vanderbilt

Kevin, Inside Vandy reports that Phi Kappa Sigma has been "suspended" for hazing and other infractions. The suspension is until fall 2012. Excerpts from the Inside Vandy site give a few more details, including info about damages to the house:

Published Mar. 28, 2010. 621 views

. . .The Interfraternity Council Formal Conduct Board suspended Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity on Thursday for hazing, conduct dangerous to the health of university community members and failure to comply with authorized directives of a student judicial body. The violation was the chapter’s second violation of hazing and new member education policies this semester.

“There is no place for hazing in our community, and chapters that refuse to change negative traditions are hurting their members, chapter and our community,” Director of Greek Life Kristin Torrey wrote in an e-mail Sunday night.

The first sanction was on March 3 from the IFC Judicial Team, but other incidents occurred after the sanction.

“Given the extensive disciplinary history of Phi Kappa Sigma and the severity of the three charges against them, the IFC Formal Conduct Board determined that it was in the best interest of the fraternity in the long term for the chapter to be suspended until fall 2012,” Torrey wrote.

“I am obviously disappointed by the decision, but I understand the reason it was levied upon the fraternity. Phi Kappa Sigma claimed full responsibility for its violations of the hazing policies,” said senior Dan Taylor, former president of the organization.

. . . Residents moved out this weekend, and the house will remain closed for the rest of the semester. After the sanction was given on Thursday, the house was extensively damaged. Items were broken inside the house and thrown from the balcony. Many walls were covered with graffiti, and a couch was lit on fire on the front porch, which caused fire spots inside the house as well.

“While we can understand that members of the chapter are disappointed and upset by the suspension decision, this behavior was completely unacceptable and may impact the future for the fraternity and the facility,” Torrey wrote.

The six residents of the house have been relocated to rooms in Kissam Quadrangle.

. . . “While we do not want the Greek community to lose more chapters, it is sometimes a necessary part of the fraternity life cycle. Many of our chapters have been suspended for a period of time during their existence at Vanderbilt, and they have all come back stronger,” Torrey wrote.
