Having friends who are members of the sororities who are able to participate in informal recruitment can help, but it is not a substitute for recommendations, unless the sorority allows collegiate members to write recommendations-some do. Did you ask any former teachers (even way back to pre-school or kindergarten) if they are sorority members: neighbors-friends parents-friends/co-workers of your parents?
Informal recruitment is not more selective-there are just less spots available for interested PNMs.

Knowing girls in the sororities is definitely an advantage. Give it a try and if it doesn't work out, go through formal recruitment in the fall (you have all spring semester and summer to get recommendations in that case).

Do you know yet which sororities will be participating?
And to FSUZeta: regarding recs, how do you advise PNMs who won't know in advance which sororities will be participating in spring recruitment, but rather find out only when they arrive the day things begin? (i.e. FSU Winterfest) I do a lot of recs, but have never had this situation come up; my "rec girls" to date have all taken part in fall recruitments.
If UFSpringPNM is in the same situation, my first thought is that she should contact Greek Life and just ask which chapters are on board for spring. In the event they can't tell her, should she 1.) contact the rush chairs of individual sororities and ask them, explaining that she is gathering recs, or 2.) Just go ahead and get recs for all chapters?
Thanks for any info!

There are some sororities that are usually lucky enough to have a few spots open when each spring roles around, so while the PNM is definitely guessing, it could be an educated guess. There are some sororities that rarely get to participate in informal recruitment because even if they have girls graduate in December, their numbers are such that they do not drop below total.
My suggestion would be that if the PNM knows a sorority alumna, she should tell her the situation..."she is going to participate in Informal recruitment, and as of yet does not know which sororities will be able to participate, but would appreciate a recommendation be sent in for her". Then the alumna could investigate from her end,if she is not from in state herself(if she is she probably knows if that chapter usually holds spring rush or not) to see if that chapter will be holding spring rush. Worst case scenario? Alumna sends in a rec. and chapter is not rushing-rec. gets tossed. PNM has to ask for a 2nd rec. for fall recruitment, if she doesn't not join a chapter in the spring.

For UF spring rush we're allowed to stay at each participating house as long as we want but we have to visit every participating house. Any suggestion as to how long I should stay at each one?

# of minutes/hours divided by number of houses.

What 33girl said, but also keep in mind that Kappa and DZ are both a short walk from the rest of sorority row (in opposite directions), and Pi Phi is over by fraternity row. Make sure to allocate time to get to and from the houses, unless Panhellenic has already made transportation arrangements for the PNMs.

That makes sense and thanks so much for the help! I'm so anxious and worried but super excited for it! Any other tips/hints/suggestions? I really hope I find that house that I click with!

Yes I'm in that situation as well because we won't know who's participating until the morning of when we actually visit the participating houses.
FSUZeta-I know that none of my relatives are sorority members but I could definitely try my teachers so thanks for that info!
adpiucf-my concern about fall though is that I would be a sophomore so it is harder to do formal recruitment if you're a sophomore?

Yes. But if you go through spring and don't get a bid, there's nothing to lose by going though again in the fall when all of the chapters are recruiting. Give it a shot this spring and see if you get a bid or not. If not, sign up for fall! If no bids after fall --> you gave it your best and you can check it off the list.
Good luck!

Give them all a chance-each group has beautiful, smart, involved members and you can find a place in any group. Throw out any preconceived notions and DO NOT listen to other opinions. Go where you like them and feel comfortable and where they like you!

Yes give them all a chance as said by FSUZeta. My dd loves her sorority at UF and loves living in the house. And I can now answer the question about the girl who got 4 bids in the spring last year and declined them all...not one of those houses extended a bid in the fall ...will not ever know why ...and then she dropped out of the one that she did get matched up to...so be open to it all and have fun!

Wow that's crazy. Honestly I feel like all of the sororities at UF are great. I just hope that I find the one I really connect to during spring and that they give me a bid
