“The situation was investigated fully back in July and there is no validity to the story whatsoever. Miss New York spoke to Mallory Hagan to let her know there was no validity and to apologize if she was offended in any way.”
This is the statement that the Miss America officials made prior to the competition. Apparently, someone else in the group (not Miss NY) made the comment that was then attributed to the contestant.

This buzzfeed article has a good look at the hate Miss New York has gotten. It's disguting that just because of her skin shade every assumes she must be middle eastern.

Mild correction for you.
What if she were of Middle Eastern origin, or Muslim, or born in a different country than the one she's in now, or anything else that makes her slightly different from Betty Sue Smith from Heartland, USA?
Absolutely nothing.
The problem isn't that these ignorant bigots think she might be any of the things listed above (full stop), but that any of those things mean she's a terrorist.
As an Indian-American, I'm very, very disappointed in her unkind comment about her predecessor, but was so very glad to see so much ethnic diversity in last night's competition. The (semi?) finalists included women from Indian (NY), Chinese (CA), likely half-Chinese (MN), and black (TX) backgrounds. I think I also noticed many other examples of ethnic diversity among all of the 53 contestants (as evidenced by names and appearances).
What accomplished young women we have representing our states and territories! A solider, many future doctors and lawyers, scholars (Miss Washington, D.C. is an Indian-American and a Phi Beta Kappa from UNC.), opera singers, and the list goes on and on! Amazing!

I think you give racist people too much credit.
When Vanessa Williams was crowned there were similar reactions to her win.

I want to add that SK NHQ may not have been aware before last night or this morning that Miss NY is a sister. I don't imagine NHQ staff obsessively check the affiliation of every pageant winner. Since I couldn't find anything that congratulated her when she won her NY crown I'm guessing nobody from her camp notified NHQ back then or before now.

I saw a lot of overly dry (IMO) not pretty blonde hair last night. It might look great in real life but the lights are too harsh on white blonde hair. I'd recommend going a bit darker for shows like this.

Yes. Yes. Yes.
It looked so damaged! And with all the additional product in the overprocessed hair it did not do any favors!

Can someone check and see if Miss Michigan - Hayley Williams is a Chi Omega? On the XO facebook page they list 3 contestants as XOs - Miss Mississippi, Miss South Carolina and Miss Michigan. From a Zoom website it states that Hayley was a student at Western Michigan University and then transferred to the University of Alabama where she is a junior. That site lists Chi Omega under membership. Hayley won a $6000 scholarship for the Quality of Life award for work on her platform - Through a Child’s Eyes: Conquering Childhood Grief.
