Starang,

Bottom line is that I have a right to dissent about any item or topic that I disagree with. That's all it is: a voice of dissent. Heck, there are a lot of political commentators/talk show hosts who are extreme left-wing or right-wing on their views. Is the basis of their views due to hurt feelings the opposing side caused? Probably not. My feelings aren't hurt at all, I simply refuse to be silent anymore. No more, no less.

Can you imagine Greekchat (or any discussion forum) if everyone just blindly agreed with everyone solely for the sake of agreement?

Dissent fuels thought and intellect. It builds character and challenges you to think outside the box, something we as humans are too lazy to do unless there is something that motivates us to do so.

Good post, IotaNet

Great insight, IotaNet. You were probably in my hometown a few weeks ago for your fraternity's convention. I wish I had ran into you and said hello. I like what you have to say.

that's your entire mantra. your entire existence on this site is the voice of dissent. the fact that you're taking your "refusal to be silent" is remiscent of someone who didn't make a line and therefore has to be a thorn in the side of an organization because of that. you graduated a while ago, but still seem to be bitter due to something of this magnatude.

your dissent doesn't breed thought or intellectual discourse due to the fact that no matter what the issue, you're going to have a negative viewpoint. you don't bring up intelligent points, you bring up inflammatory nonsense so that you can sit smugly behind your computer and think "i told you black greeks something today!!!"

it's quite a pathetic existence that you have because it seems that nothing is positive in your life, thus you must bring other people down in order for you to feel top dog.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the Alphas at Rutgers Univ. (NB) left the NPHC and affiliated with the IFC.

Getting a little technical about it, but Kappa Alpha Psi and Iota Phi Theta are members of the NIC (North American Interfraternity Conference), which is different from IFC (Inter-Fraternity Council).

The NIC has inter/national orgs as members. IFCs are college-level councils that have chapters as members. IFCs are not "local chapters" or the like of the NIC.

Even if a fraternity does not belong to the NIC, it is quite possible that some or all of its chapters will belong to campus IFCs. For example, while Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is not a member of the NIC, many of its chapters are members of campus IFCs.

Likewise, a fraternity may belong to the NIC, but its chapters may affiliate at the campus level with a council other than IFC (such as the campus NPHC).

OK, then what would you suggest that WOULD make an intellectual debate?

And don't say anything along the lines of "Be quiet", because frankly, that's not going to happen.

I don't know about Rutgers, but it definitely happened at UVA.

Putting a little more objective spin on the topic:

To elaborate more on my original response to the OP's question (yes, there will probably be a 10th group in about 20 years, if not sooner), the biggest hindrance to the non-NPHC orgs is that their existence functions more as a regional GLO than as a national GLO. In other words, their exposure as far as how well known they are as an org is limited to the region they primarily exist in. For instance, here is a list of orgs and the primary region they serve:

Phi Eta Psi - Midwest, primarily in Michigan
Phi Delta Psi - Midwest
Phi Omicron Psi - Eastern seaboard (MD/DC area)
Phi Alpha Psi - Eastern seaboard (MD/DC area)
Beta Phi Pi - Midwest
Phi Rho Eta - Midwest, primarily in Illinois
Delta Psi Chi - Midwest, primarily in Wisconsin
Gamma Phi Eta - South, primarily in Georgia (assuming they still exist)
Xi Gamma Phi - South, primarily in Georgia (assuming they still exist)

Note that I am focused on those orgs that were founded prior to 2000.

The only non-NPHC org whose chapters covers a more broader area scope is Gamma Phi Delta. Unfortunately, I don't know to what magnitude, since it appears their website only lists currently active chapters and it looks like a lot of their undergraduate chapters are inactive.

Note that while G Phi D has chapters in multiple regions, there are no chapters in the Mid Atlantic (NY/NJ area), New England, and Rocky Mountain/Great Plains states. But I am sure that as time goes on, those areas will be covered as well.

Hope this helps.

Here's an all-inclusive Black Greek Council

It doesn't have to be similiar to NPHC. I have found that a lot of these organizations are formed partly because the founders don't like the way things are done in NPHC. So they could come up with their own council that would address the needs they feel NPHC doesn't meet. A lot of universities have Black Greek Councils anyway so it could become a national organization.
I found a college website which members includes NPHC and non-NPHC orgs. I will qualify this by saying that I don't know how commonplace the makeup of such Black Greek councils as this one is.

Anyway, see for yourself, and take it for what you will:

University of Illinois Black Greek Council
