A few new stories and view points:
Weber says he wasn't told of feds on campus
May 10, 2008

San Diego State University President Stephen Weber was unaware federal agents were posing as students to crack a campus drug ring until about two weeks before the end of the five-month undercover effort.
Weber said yesterday that he didn't learn about the federal role in Operation Sudden Fall until April 21, shortly before the yearlong investigation culminated Tuesday with the announcement of 96 drug-related arrests that included 75 students. By the end of the week, the District Attorney's Office reported those numbers had grown to 125 total arrests, 95 involving students. Weber didn't notify his boss, California State University Chancellor Charles Reed, until Monday. ..........

Frats condemn crimes at SDSU

UCLA Greek system members say drug activity here is unlikely to occur on large scale

A day after dozens of students at San Diego State University – including several fraternity members – were arrested in a major drug bust, leaders of the Greek system’s Westwood chapters expressed confidence that no such incident was possible at UCLA.
Almost 100 people were arrested Tuesday, 75 of them SDSU students, after a six-month investigation that was prompted after a student died of a cocaine overdose. During the investigation, another cocaine overdose death occurred at an SDSU fraternity house.......

Drug arrests are busting up SDSU's rep

A university is a brand, complete with an image that it sells to potential customers.

Well, it's damage control time. San Diego State's brand suffered a major disaster Tuesday, when "Operation Sudden Fall" caused the national image of SDSU to suddenly plummet. Anytime CNN, MSNBC and every major news outlet plasters a university's name across their front page as headline news, that's a huge problem.

Make no mistake about it: Not all publicity is good publicity. The students who chose to deal drugs out of on-campus fraternity houses, using their connections within the Greek system to build a network of customers, just devastated the Aztec brand.....

Why is this news? This article seems like one big spoon full of bullshit.

"We have active alumni at our house frequently so our members aren't involved in criminal activities." Give me a f-ing break.

SDSU Lifts Interim Suspension on Three Fraternities

SAN DIEGO (Thursday, May 15, 2008) – San Diego State University has lifted the interim suspension from three campus fraternities, the university announced today.

After a review of case details, SDSU Vice President for Student Affairs James Kitchen lifted the interim suspension from the Phi Kappa Theta, Sigma Alpha Mu and Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternities. The suspension was lifted after an administrative review found that those arrested in connection to the controlled substances investigation were either inactive members of the fraternity and/or were not presently residents of chapter houses.

The three fraternities had been placed on interim suspension based on each having a single member arrested on felony charges. However, the university review found that there was not sufficient information to implicate the fraternity chapter as a whole.

Three other fraternity chapters, including Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Chi, are still on interim suspension pending further investigation by SDSU administration.

For more information on the controlled substances investigation at SDSU, please visit www.sdsu.edu/information.

San Diego State University is the oldest and largest higher education institution in the San Diego region. Since it was founded in 1897, the university has grown to offer bachelor's degrees in 81 areas, master's degrees in 73 areas and doctorates in 16 areas. SDSU's more than 34,000 students participate in an academic curriculum distinguished by direct contact with faculty and an increasing international emphasis that prepares them for a global future. For more information, visit www.sdsu.edu.

Wow, can you even imagine working in the SDSU communications & marketing office these days? They must be in overdrive 24/7 right now. I noticed this logo on the investigation information page:

And then this press release about their new message/p.r. push. I give them a lot of credit and hope they get big bonuses or extra vacation time when all of this eventually calms down: http://advancement.sdsu.edu/marcomm/.../pr051508.html

There is a full page ad in the SD Union Trib today with a list of supporters of SDSU and how it's handling the situation.

"We alumni, faculty, staff, students, parents and friends at San Diego State University support the university and its leadership in taking a stand to ensure a safe campus environment. We would expect nothing less of a top urban research university. SDSU, we are prouder than ever."

you can go to www.sdsu.edu/prouderthanever and add your name.

Should it be "More Proud Than Ever"? Is "Prouder Than Ever" proper English?

There must be something we don't know about for them to keep this chapter open - even if they are reorganizing, theirs was the name that got bandied about the most in this deal. Do they have a super expensive house there or something?

Yeah dont get me wrong i mean it was only a handful of the actual members and i get along with Theta Chi at my school but damn this is too crazy. i feel you i bet if other charters were pulled for little dumb things. i guess my friend told me (SDSU STudent) that they are in the process of building a 5 or so million dollar house so maybe that? and well the chapter has been around for a while too so idk but still haha.

A reorg is pretty intense. You would have to talk to an actual OX but from what I know it's the last resort before yanking the charter. The OX over here was reorged in 2000. They went from 30-40 to something like 5 or 6. It works though, hearing stories of how they were back them and being close friends with a lot of them now.
