I agree, I think you have to file the SR-1 with the DMV when the damages exceed 500...which isn't very hard in most accidents! You do not, however, have to file a police report if you don't want to (and the other party doesn't want to). I think (but I'm not 100% sure) that if someone is injured then you have to file the police report.
I'm not sure if an accident causes a point to appear on your record. I know in some cases the police can cite you for something after an accident. But I was under the impression that only the tickets and stuff put points on your record. As far as I know, accidents are just something your insurance company takes into account when establishing your rates.
