Does anyone else find it kind of interesting that so many countries still have "royalty"??

I think I'd be a little upset if my tax dollars and my money was going to support their lifestyle. But then again, I guess we do spend $10 to see bad movies to support our "celebrities".

Actually -- at least with the British royalty, I believe it's claimed that the royals bring in more than enough in tourist dollars to cover how much they cost the country in taxes. Which explains one reason why the system hasn't been done away with despite its lack of relevance to the government today.

I don't think America has any "royalty," at least not these days. Although if we did, I think the Kennedys and the Bushes would both have to be included.

I remember as a kid we'd go on field trips to Iolani Palace -- former home of King David Kalakaua and Queen Lydia Lil`uokalani until the overthrow. I remember being in awe at the grandeur of the place. It was so big and beautiful.

I still get the same feeling after all these years.

I have a good friend who lives in England, and her family is very anti-monarchy. The funny thing is, her mother was bound & determined to see Graceland before she died.

I mentioned that to my own mother, who replied, "They don't like the Queen, so they're coming here to see the King?"

And sugarandspice is right - as anti-monarchist as my friends are, they surely love the tourist money that the Royals generate!

I knew a prince. He married a friend of the family. It wasn't that big of a deal. There are all sorts of people, including royals, living in NYC.

I agree that the Monaco royals are really great looking.

EWWWW I just googled images of Prince Albert. I had no idea that I would see such dirty pictures. EWWWWW!

Well for starters there's not a whole lot of them left. And even fewer go on to public office these days. And even fewer stay out of a scandal. Until I read more about Hawaiian history and culture, all I knew about Iolani Palace is that it was the Hawaii Five-O headquarters (at least the exterior).

Damned shame that much of the furnishings of the palace were sold off to the highest bidder at the turn of the 20th century; I'm glad to see that much of it is finally coming back to their rightful home.

With regard to the British monarchy it is actually a very good deal for the British people. When the Monarch dies his/her estate passes to the next Monarch, but, the new monarch assigns the crown estate to the British government to be administered. The civil list is what pays the Royals for performing their duties. The civil list is funded by the earnings of the crown estate. The earnings of the crown estate are very much larger than the funds paid into the civil list and what is left over goes to the government to the general fund. The monarch also inherits the previous monarch's PERSONAL estate and has for some years now paid regular income tax on that as well. So, the Royal holdings are used by the government to defray the expenses of the monarchy, the residue (worth millions of Pounds Sterling) go to the people through the general fund, and the personal income tax on personal holdings goes to the government's inland revenue dept. just like anyone else. The tourist value of the Royals is worth quite a lot and they actually cost nothing and contribute millions to the public purse. The anti-monarchists like to gloss over this rather interesting point.
