I hear 4th graders are able to make all sorts of decisions rationally.

Not to pull race into this, but with the exception of michael jackson, nobody seem to go around changing the color of their skin when they have identity issues. I'm not about to pass judgment on anyone because of their choice of lifestyle, but doesn't a 4th grader sound just a bit much?

Maybe we just have waaay too much time on our hands and find new ways to mess with our bodies. Children should not be pursuing a sex change operation or any of this crap. When you're an adult and you have these urges. go for it.
It's not about a sex change operation, it's about this individual expressing his gender identity. For this child it's more than being a 'tomboy', it's a profound difference. I'm sure that his parents consulted doctors left and right, and have wrestled with this situation.

I'm glad that this is being corrected now to prevent an adulthood of shame and guilt.

I just hope that child grows up to accept himself for who he really is.
A better book is "She's Not There : A Life in Two Genders by JENNIFER FINNEY BOYLAN (Hardcover - July 2003)"

Being transgendered is more than just the simple physical anatomy of your genitalia. It has to do with brain STRUCTURE (anyone watching Anderson Cooper's series this week...VERY interesting on this), in utero exposure to hormones and unknown factors.

Being transgendered DOES NOT always mean being on a course for GRS (gender reassignment surgery) but frequently it does. F to M is less frequent than M to F, but it does occur.

This child's parents are obviously LOVING and courageous to be proactive and responsible as they are. They should be applauded!
