They do seem excessive.

However, I noticed a furore amongst older (30+) people about the news that high school children thought that "sometimes the First Amendment goes too far" a while back. [link] [link (graph)] [link3]

Often there's no line drawn between 'speech' and 'conduct involving communication', even if the free speech might be unpopular, caustic, hateful speech.

The ACLU is sometimes seen as having an absolutist view.
