I don't quite understand how it's a "monopoly" per se. Being that it's not one business. A person can go to any attorney or firm that they choose too. The ABA (which is the governing body of sorts) isn't a for-profit enterprise.

The Courts and/or Legislatures of most states determine the particulars for being admitted to the bar.

I didn't have the time or patience to go through this article point for point, but I do think in some cases people can handle things themselves fairly well when it comes to a simple divorce, etc. But you run the risk of shooting yourself in the foot.

So do we think doctors also have a monopoly then?
