Smile Formal Ideas Please

Hey Everyone!

I have been voted VP of my sorority for Spring '05 semester and I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for a formal. I attend a Christian University, so I can't have anything too wild. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

From,
Aimee AKA "Magma"

A few questions to help us

What is your sorority? What are your colors, flower, etc.? How many actives are in your chapter? Do you live in a big city or are you on a rural campus? How big is your campus?

My sorority is Kappa Psi Nu. Its not a national chapter but a sorority the school I go to made. Our colors are winter white and gold and we have about 15 active members right now. I attend school at Lee U and there are about 3800-4000 students. The town is about 40,000 people, not huge but not really rural either. Any ideas on a formal for my club would be greatly appreciated.

If you had the dough, a nice Christian band might be nice, depending on the tastes of your members.

Don't forget the souveniers! (sp?) I don't know what you all can afford, but everybody likes give-aways at things like this.

Okay, well I do.

I'm sorry; I forgot one more important question.

When's the formal?

RUGreek, lol.

I go to a Christian school too (Catholic), and you might not want a Christian band (hey, I love Christian music - I'm listening to Chris Rice right now) for your formal. Not everyone there is gonna be a Christian, or is gonna like that kind of music.. etc. Cute idea though; the music is great.

Hey, I have an idea that would be fun - why doesn't everyone throw out your prom ideas so we can get new ideas (rather than mixer ideas)? Not only would they be new, they would be "clean" (since they're high school-sponsored).

Junior year, our theme was "Black and White Ball". Supposed to be classy, but it was boring, in my opinion. If you do use this, use your sorority colors and deck the place out! It could be cute, if done right.

We did "Viva Las Vegas" (casino theme, not Elvis theme ) senior year - covered tables in green felt and glued cards to them and put poker chips in the middle of the tables, gave out glowsticks, had a cute sign with light bulbs around the border, and our pictures were taken as if we were at a wedding chapel (they gave us a veil, top hat, and bouquet to use in the pictures, taken in front of a big silver bell centerpiece thing! It was so cute). So much fun!

Tau Love, Marly

my (local sorority) chapter threw a formal together in about 2 weeks. We ended up having it on a riverboat in Marietta and getting a block of rooms at a hotel there. We couldn't really decorate, but our president burned a ton of music onto CD's, taking suggestions at chapter beforehand, and then creating the CD's from there. We borrowed huge speakers from one of our alumns. It was really nice because the sun set and we were all dancing on the top deck, and all the christmas lights on the boat came on....super sweet and very affordable. Only sisters 21 and older could BYOB, which was controlled by our chapter advisor (the best guy EVER!). And there were little snacks. Before hand we all met at a restaurant beside our hotel and had dinner. It was hillarious because we were all dressed in our fancy dresses in this Damon's...and IN COMES THE TOWN'S HIGH SCHOOL PROM GOERS! Everyone kinda looked at us like, "aren't they a little old to be going to prom?".

Not that our ideas would be mutually exclusive, but given the type of school and type of sorority she is in, I would bet that the majority, if not everyone there would be Christian.

You don't need a huge theme for a formal, they can be pretty tacky. I look back at prom and it was great then, tacky now. Look at the local hotels. They will have conference rooms that can be rented out for formals, rooms are various sizes and they will have your cheapest options if you are doing a dinner. Do something nice and classy. We had the Yellow Rose formal. Centerpieces usually had something to do with the roses, but other than that we just did ivory linens, standard uncovered chairs and what not. You can get a DJ or if someone has an IPOD they'd be willing to use, you can up load it and just get good speakers if cost is really an issue. We did it once and there was this little box thing that the ipod went through before the speakers. Make sure you find out how much people will be willing to pay though first. it sucks to plan something and then some people can't afford to go, esp with 15 sisters.
