for your information, Adpi and Phi Mu are the two oldest greek organizations for women. And they were both found in the south, Macon, GA to be exact. And they are the Two best greek organizations anyone should feel honored to be invited to join.

Wow this is old...but yeah it was that dress!!!! And because Lord & Taylor was going out of business...guess how much that dress was? It was less than $25 due to their crazy going out of business sales!!!!

I agree... I LOVE the idea of being a Southern belle even if I'm born and raised in Missouri... haha... being a Kappa (which many associate with the South, even if we weren't founded there) I can kind of fake it, right?!

As for the whole debutante thing that was discussed earlier... although it is predominantly Southern, I find it interesting that people don't consider it in the midwest at all. One of my sisters is a debutante and she too is from Missouri... I guess it just depends on whether or not you consider Missouri a midwestern state or a southern state. (Personally, I don't consider it either... we're not the south, but I refuse to be bombarded with midwestern stereotypes. I don't live on a farm... I live in St. Louis!! )

And, off topic, the midwestern prom thing... my prom was in a hotel in downtown St. Louis and it cost $90!! My dress was $250 and that was middle-of-the-road for what girls were spending. Prom in a gym is a crazy thought!! (But we do have homecoming at our school...)

I think its interesting to be in a strong "southern" sorority way up here in the pacific NW. Sometimes it feels very isolating to know that a majority of your sisters are in the opposite corner of the country. When the next closest chapter (to the three of us up here) is Sacramento (I believe) its very strange. Heck, the next closest chapter to mine is 300 miles away!! Oh, if only the Oregon chapters were still around...

To stay off topic for one more second...I don't really know of any towns around me that actually had prom somewhere other than a gym. Maybe if you were in Madison or Milwaukee, which are WAY different than the rest of the state, you wouldn't have. We tried to have it off-site and the school pitched a fit. We also had to sell tickets for our parents to see the grand march, (you know when they introduce EVERYONE) we ended up moving it earlier than in previous years and parents got really mad at us. It is just they way things were done. We did the whole thing up in gossamer and whatnot so it looked nice, but you could still see the half-court line.

"Midwestern" prom norms definitely don't apply to the private schools in Chicago -- mine was in a ritzy Gold Coast hotel. I wore a Betsey Johnson dress...Jessica McClintock was for the unhip.

I honestly don't think that "Midwestern" prom norms apply to many Chicago schools. I went to a public high school in Chicago, and our prom was at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Chi. Tickets were btwn $85 -$100/couple. Even junior prom was at the Holiday Inn downtown. I think we must have paid about $60/couple. Now we did have our "winter ball" (we called it Snowball) at the school. This was only for seniors so it was kind of a mini prom. Also, all of our homecoming dances were at the school, too. I must admit though, that I did wear a Jessica McClintock dress, so maybe Chicagoians aren't so different afterall.

As for the debutante ball, these were also pretty popular in Chicago. Maybe they are more common in the African-American community due to the presence of African American sororities in the community. I'm not sure. Though I was not a debutante, many of my friends were in cotillions held by BGLO alumni chapters or local churches. I even remember that my HS principal lent (or is it loaned?) her wedding dress to a friend of mine to wear when she came out.

I think those of us who had these 'midwestern' proms were refering more to rural areas than places like Chicago. There is a huge difference in culture between the two place.

My school was SO HUGE! My graduating class was the largest in the SouthEast in 2003. We could NEVER do anything on campus like prom with over 1,300 (guesstimate) graduating. (I say guestimate cos i KNOW not everyone graduated!) LOL! We always have our graduations in the local sports/concert arenas to fit in all the kids (on the ground level) and the families (in the lower and upper levels).

As for our prom, it was at a HUGE place called Signature Grand that looked like a mansion but is built specifically for weddings and receptions, quinces (sweet 15 for hispanic girls), sweet sixteens, debutes, etc as well as proms. It was an AWESOME night and the ballrooms are HUGE. The place is luxurious and way better than any hotel as it's sole purpose is for rental for the above reasons. We had a GRAND time LOL and we had of course the biggest rooom available (it can also be closed up into like 3/4 separate rooms but it was wide opened up for our HUGE prom bash!

As for my dress, no one else in the entire WORLD has is cos I designed it (the basics anyways) my grandma made it. It is a huge gold and cream (gold in appearance though) dress with a petticoat so stiff it stands up by itself! It was the same one my aunt wore to her prom only my dress was so heavy my grandma had to add several yards of material to keep the dress up! When I started to dance low to the floor my dress required like 4ft of space for itself! LOL! My boyfriend (who had a huge crush and was courting my neighbor at the time and took her to prom [before we got together of course!] STILL HATES IT! It was way too traditional for him and he likes those tight clingy dress but not me! WHO SAYS FLORIDIANS CAN'T BE SOUTHERN? It's my Georgia roots showing!
