A relative of mine offered me three cans of salmon in his cabinet. I told him I wasn't interested and suggested he try another relative, to which he replied, "I'm trying to get some money for it or a trade." When I asked him where he got them from, his response was -- a local food pantry.
Also, last December his phone was out, and since his home and my job are in the same city, he cultivated a habit for showing up at my office unannounced. One of these dreaded visits last year was during our floor's holiday party, which I had not told him about and which he did indeed stay for -- I was so embarrassed! Since then, he has bugged me all year about whether we're doing it again (today I found out the planned date)!
I hope to hold him off by saying it isn't in the budget this year.
