As someone with a History degree I think this should be mentioned.
Homosexual relationships during the ancient Greek times were often encouraged. The thing is women were considered highly inferior to men. The only reason a man was with a woman was to impregnate her and continue "the family line". Men were the superior beings so in their minds it was only logical for men to be with other men. (if that makes any sense at all).
Now I should mention that this is what I learned in my ancient Greece class I took I am in no way extremely "scholarly" with Ancient Greece but this is what my teacher told us.

For the reasons that you just stated, I couldn't understand for the life of me why the Council would have a problem with the movie. Some of the scenes with Jared and Colin looked like they were uncomfortable. Jared, I think, did very well with his character. Colin Farrell...needed help...something because he tanks on the screen.
