That's because of the Mercator map projection... as you move north or south from the equator the distortion apparent from flattening the top of a sphere is noticeable.

It's always fun to watch the opening ceremony for the Olympics and see how there's always one or two volcanic island countries I've NEVER heard of in my life (and probably never will again, at least until the next Olympics hehe).

Then again, these tiny, insignificant countries will have more people in the entourage than athletes participating!
