To bold, italicize etc, go to the left of the posting box where it says "UBB Code is ON" and it shows you how to so it. It took me forever to find this too!
The "basic" smilies are right under that. The more exotic ones come from a couple other sites which I'm sure someone will be nice enough to give you the address of, since I'm not sure.
