Yes, we do and same holds true for wearing your badge. No alcohol is to be consumed in letters or with your badge on. When the national board I am on go out to dinner, we all take our badges off if we will be having wine and we are adults!

LOL about the "sweatshit" but... yes, you're right I suppose. I would not roll out of bed and put on letters. I may even think twice about putting on a party shirt. I've always been taught to look well-groomed and put-together when wearing letters. I wouldn't wear letters if I was unshowered, for example. I have been chastized by one of my pledge class sisters for wearing letters when I looked hungover. I have felt extremely guilty for wearing letters with wet hair, because it doesn't look very polished.

I have lots of clothes. Letters are not my "go-to" item when I get dressed for my 8 am class.

ETA that I would also never turn my shirt inside out and think that I was fooling anyone.

It amazes me how different campuses are. Because this is exactly how a lot of people showed up to morning classes at my school.

Kind of a question on the same track, but would you wear letter or party shirts when you were at the gym or working out?

Hmm...I would never wear letters to class looking like crap. But I wear letters/party shirts to the rec pretty much every day. I guess the rationale behind being able to wear letters to the gym is because despite the fact that we look like crap, it shows that we aren't a bunch of lazy butts.

I wonder if things have changed then. Because I knew quite a bit of people that showed up just rolled out of bed with a party tshirt or a letter sweatshirt on.

Yeah, that's how I feel. I wouldn't wear a stitched-letter shirt (that's what I mean when I say "letters") to the gym because those shirts just don't seem RIGHT for that type of activity. But I would wear a party shirt... people assume that you may look sweaty at the gym, so I don't think it is a poor representation of your sorority.

Hypocritically though, I have no problem wearing FRATERNITY party shirts on my not-so-cute days... I guess I just don't think it matters as much.

I honestly don't think it's a North/South thing. Maybe a campus thing, or a time thing, but definitely not a North/South thing.

We weren't EVER to go to class without presenting "a clean and tidy" appearance, letters or not. The idea behind that was that people knew which sorority you were in, no matter what you were wearing.

Ha, I think it's more of just a "me" thing. I can think of several chapters with girls that show up to class in a letter sweatshirt hungover with black X's rubbed off on their faces.

I think we have to define what "looking like cr@p" means. If I'm wearing a t-shirt or sweatshirt (lettered or not), I'm not going to be all made up. My hair'll probably be tied back, and I'm either wearing jeans or other casual pants, including lounge pants if I'm at home.

I don't think I would wear a letter shirt, but recruitment or a social shirt I definately would and do. It actually is a nice way to pick out other greeks. Cute side story: If this one girl didnt wear an event shirt I wouldn't have known she was a sister from the Elon chapter! It was a nice surprise meeting another Sigma from another school!

So rock those shirts proudly at the gym!

Some sororities forbid their members from eating me in letters as to not appear fat.

This saddens me to the core...my delicious, moist, fluffy core.

Actually, I could quickly name at least 3 sororities (I can PM the names, it would be tacky to name them here) on campus who were stricter about this. It was possibly also the fact that we're talking longer ago than the last couple years.

My chapter's kinda stringent when it comes to these things.
A short list-

No:

drinking in letters
exercizing in letters
sleeping in letters
letters on the butt
letters as footwear
letters as underwear
cursing in letters
letters in places where alcohol is being served (such as bar or club)

Must:
wear shoes (no sneakers!) when wearing letters (including umbrellas, bags, jackets)
look polished when in letters
