We're not allowed to wear our letters on campus (as in, not to class). At first I thought it was the dumbest rule, but now I am so appreciative of it. A lot of professor's are "anti-
Greek", so wearing your letters can, sometimes, give the professor a bad first impression of a girl. I think it's tacky to wear the sweatshirts with the huge letters plastered across your chest to class, it's great to be proud of your sorority, but school isn't the appropriate time to parade around in your letters like you are making some kind of superiority statement. While we aren't allowed to wear our letters to class (KAO), we are allowed to wear shirts that say Kappa Alpha Theta, and most of our philanthropy or function shirts don't have the letters, they have the spelled out words.

I'm not familiar with what SMH means, but I'm not sure on our HQ's position on this. And know that it is a suggestion, a strong suggestion, but a suggestion none the less. If you are caught wearing your letters on campus there is absolutely no penalty or fine or punishment (obviously). It is something we choose to do and pride ourselves in.

Are you suggesting your P's can't read the words and won't know what sorority?

You pride yourself in being ashamed of your letters???
Why not make an effort to dispell the stereotypes and turn around the so-called anti-greek sentiment of your professors? Chances are many of your professors are greeks themselves.

This is the stupidest thing I have ever heard.
I normally am not one for people getting "busted", but I really hope your HQ reads this and re-evaluates your chapter's role within the organization.
Oh, and SMH means "shaking my head" as in disbelief.

So, how does that work for you recruitment-wise? Is that a great selling point - we don't wear letters because Prof's hate Greeks, even though we know we're superior??

That seems a little ridiculous. As to the point someone made about professors likely being greek, that in my experience is extremely rare. Quite the opposite, I imagine most in academia were the ones against greek life. Also, at least around here, greeks tend to seek out more "real world" employment, like being an attorney, CPA, engineer, etc.
As to the point regarding the sweatshirts and hoodies with the big letters on them, we don't wear them here either. We don't have an official rule, but everyone on campus knows not to do it, I think its pretty tacky.

Why are the letters tacky? Just because they're big? In that case, any shirt with a logo or design that takes up the whole shirt is tacky. Is there another reason?
I can see how if you sat way in the back the professor wouldn't be able to read the words spelled out on your shirt. But if you sit in the back all the time, the prof probably doesn't think very highly of you anyway.

It's probably "tacky" meaning, not popular on that campus. Some people think that the lettered tote bags are tacky, because that's not what they do on their campus. I personally think the lettered butt shorts are tacky, but I think all but one sorority had rules against them on my campus - no sitting on your letters. But hey, that might work on KU's campus - your prof can't see your letters if you're sitting on them.

I understand what tacky means. I was asking why they thought it was tacky.

If you thought I was defining "tacky" for you, then I suggest you find a dictionary and really look it up. "Not popular on that campus" is NOT a good definition of tacky. I was giving my opinion as to why THEY thought it was tacky, which was your question. If I really thought you needed a definition I would have pointed you to dictionary.com.

It doesn't sound like it's an all campus thing, it sounds like this girl is saying THEY don't do it because they think it's tacky but all the other (tacky) sororities do and therefore they're better than the other sororities.
I can understand not wearing letter sweatshirts someplace like shinerbock's campus where it doesn't get under 60 degrees - sweating like a hog when you don't have to is always tacky.

Its not the fact that its a sweatshirt, although you're right it doesnt get very cold...No I think its just plain tacky. Not just sweatshirts or hoody's but "jersey" type lettered shirts as well. Someone said that in that case any logo that takes up the entire shirt would be "tacky." To that, I say you are absolutely correct. I do not distinguish between them. On my campus, and many I've been to, you can pretty much identify the greeks easily, even when they aren't letters.
