And even if you're at a big school - it's just hypocrisy to me (I know I've said this a million times on this subject but I really don't care). If you think people are so obtuse as to only be able to identify you when you have letters on, and you can act like a dolt the rest of the time and get away with it, that's a real disconnect of thought patterns there.

I agree as well. True Story.

I'm sure you wouldn't wear a Jane Fonda leotard with a pink headband on the treadmill either. Doesn't make it designer duds.

Is Lacoste not considered a designer brand? I'm sorry, but if you go to Bergdorf Goodman, Saks or Bloomies it will be considered a designer brand. I'm not comparing it to Alvin Valley or Escada, but it is a designer brand.
Yes some people do treat their clothes carelessly, and some people are raised to take great pride in their belongings. It's not a class thing; it's a personal appearance and attitude thing. I know plenty of upper-class women who refuse to engaged in sports that will cause them to sweat profusely in the company of others, but they will workout excessively on the treadmill in their basement. Guess what's they're not wearing on the treadmill? A Lacoste shirt. As for people wearing designer dudes to the tennis court, clearly this is nothing new. People will play tennis in their backyard with family wearing whatever, but playing at the country club or someone elses home is a completely different occasion.

If there's nobody there to see her, does the profusely sweaty upper-class woman running on the treadmill in her basement wear a Lacoste shirt?
Anyway, I can't even begin to understand why a woman engaging in a kick-ass workout complete with sweat shouldn't wear letters, and I agree 100% with what CutiePie2000 said above. There isn't much that reflects better on an organization than having members who take care of themselves.

Is it possible that people focus too much on the pressures to behave in a certain way just because they are known as greek?
If you made the decision to become greek, than those things are definitely part of the package, huh?

The only thing I'd add is that you really should do your best not to have your picture taken with a drink in one hand, cigarette in the other and have your letters on. For some reason, THOSE are the photos that find their way into the Yearbook! In fact, one of my favorite photos of a XO friend shows just that, and she was called up on their equivilant of Standards charges. The worst part is, this was taken at a private, All-Greek mixer, not at a bar.

I still disagree with this.
I see no issue with wanting to put your best foot forward. I put on makeup for dates. I wear heels to interviews. I don't drink in letters.
I agree on her point that if you think you're fooling other folks on campus, you've got another think coming. Everybody knows you drink/smoke/whatever, and everyone knows you're a (insert group name here). So, be aware of that, and act accordingly.
But I see NO problem with not drinking when you're wearing letters, not swearing in front of your mom, and keeping your elbows off the table at grandma's. Some things are just respectful.

I don't either.
But I don't think that drinking or smoking means you are NOT "putting your best foot forward." They are legal activities.

I wouldn't do them in front of my boyfriend's parents the first time I met them.
Farting is a legal activity, too, as far as that goes.

That's your opinion. If my bf's parents offered me a glass of wine or a beer, I certainly wouldn't refuse it.

Ha. Well.... yes.
I also think smoking is smelly and gross. Again, my opinion.

The majority of undergraduates are under 21 so drinking is illegal in the US, letters or not.
And if you are under the legal age and you are offered an alcoholic drink by your bf's parents the first time you meet, don't accept. You're still breaking the law and that is NOT a way to impress the potential in-laws.
Behave in your letters as you would in church or at work. No carousing or obnoxious behavior, no smoking, and no drinking. Surely that is not so difficult.
