It's true though...I hear a lot about being "practically engaged," or "basically engaged." I don't know about all of that, we waited to say anything until she had the ring and we were doing the planning.

I'm sorry I offended you.
But, I know what you're getting at. Our families have known for some time, and in my mind they're the most important ones. The day before we were planning to tell our friends, my best friend from college died suddenly. That took any and all interest any of us had in wedding planning or even talking about it.
Notice, it's not the guys who are "practically engaged." It's the little girls who don't even have a plan of what they want to do after graduation, but know what dress they want to wear!
