It's not about having a gay storyline, it just that can NO ONE just be friends on a show? I'd really like to see a storyline about girl friends getting their friendship back after being on the outs over a guy and it actually work with them staying friends.

They can be friends, but that'd be too boring.

Lucas and Nathan were enemies, now friends. Dan was the enemy, and maybe he's coming around now. Brooke and Peyton were friends, then rivals, then they're friends again. So many things happened in just the first season alone, I really don't see how the show will keep its appeal without something juicy.
