Bush to address NAACP after five-year hiatus
Tuesday, July 18, 2006; Posted: 1:40 p.m. EDT (17:40 GMT)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- After a five-year absence, President Bush will appear before the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the nation's oldest civil rights organization, the White House announced Tuesday.
His speech on Thursday comes as his Republican Party tries to court black voters ahead of critical congressional elections in November and almost a year after the Bush administration was widely criticized for failing to help the poor and black communities in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Well the NAACP basically calling for a boycott of Target shows how petty they really are.

Found this NAACP calls on blacks to avoid Target
Short version: NAACP does a Diversity survey every year
Target has gotten an F, a D-, and another F over the past 3 years. (see wikipedia article on Target)
Target won't tell the NAACP anything about it's hiring practices.
Oh and the article threw in that Oprah endorsed Tar-jay.
I don't know anything about the NAACP's survey, but if Target doesn't WANT to share their info, they don't have to. They just shouldn't be surprised if this happens...

The NAACP presents surveys or something similar, that businesses can complete in order to recieve a ranking by the NAACP or whatever subsidiary organization does this...anyhow, Target, among others, simply didn't complete the "survey" (from what I understand, its not like a single page survey, its an extensive questionaire type project to complete), and for their non-compliance, recieved an F from the NAACP. Also, someone from the NAACP made some comments saying that black people should avoid their stores, but didn't actually use the word boycott. Target issued a press release noting some statistics, where 40 something percent of their employees are black, along with 20 something percent of their supervising/managerial staff. They said they did not complete the survey because they want to be inclusionary of everyone, and not focus on a single race. I find it really ridiculous when the NAACP and similar "civil rights" organizations issue these type of surveys to companies and universities, and give them a failing grade for not responding. Who are they to determine that everyone must take time to participate in something, for fear of being deemed not hospitable/unreceptive/prejudiced or something along those lines.

If it's true that they simply didn't fill out the survey, I'm disappointed in the way the NAACP handled it. They shouldn't give an F and move on, they should put that information is not given.
Sure, then boycott, protest whatever. But don't make it sound like Target is failing to hire black/advertise in their neighborhoods etc just that they aren't willing to share that information with the NAACP.

Well from the article you posted, the information is out there that Target refused to provide the information....
And no, they don't have to fill out the questionaire if they choose not to do so.
I wouldn't worry about Target... I'm sure they will respond in what they think is their best interest in light of a possible "boycott."

Well I don't really agree with much of what the NAACP does, but if they merely said "We can't speak on Target, they did not respond to the survey," I think that would be fine. However, I don't like the situation they try and create where companies and schools are basically forced to answer to the NAACP.

So why don't you start your own thread about that, this thread was started b/c of a subpar president's failure to meet with or acknowledge any concerns of people of color. As far as I'm concern the NAACP should tell Bush to go to hell...his response or shall I say lack of response to victims of Hurricane Katrina spoke volumes.
