50 CENT BOOED OVERSEAS: Rapper fails to rock the rock crowds.
(Aug. 31, 2004) *Damn homie. Apparently, fans of rock bands like Placebo, Lostprophets and Dropkick Murphys have no patience for hip hop – or maybe they just don’t like 50 Cent. The brother was booed from the moment he and the G-Unit stepped on stage at the Carling Weekend: Reading festival in the U.K. Sunday night, which featured a lineup of rock acts - including the three mentioned above.
As British-based publication NME puts it, he was “dramatically booed off stage” and was hit with a barrage of plastic bottles – some reportedly filled with urine. Somebody even hurled a camping chair.
“What was he even doing up there? It was the worst thing I’ve ever seen,” one festival goer told NME.
After a while, 50 started throwing the plastic bottles back into the crowd. Chants of
“50 Cent is a wanker” (CTFU) were shouted in response, along with other choice words. The rapper then decided to placate the thousands of people by saying, “We’re just all here to have fun.” When that didn’t work, he challenged them to all put their middle fingers in the air.
Needless to say, 50 and the G-Unit cut their set short. They managed to get through “In Da Club,” “21 Questions” “P.I.M.P” and several others before 50 thanked the crowd and skedaddled.
The Reading festival had 50 scheduled to play between 8:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., but they took the stage twenty minutes earlier at 8:10 p.m., and was outta there by 8:35.
Things were a little better for the crew at the Carling Weekend: Leeds festival two days earlier. The rap outfit took the stage to a mixed reception at first, but soon the boos were drowned out by cheers as they ripped into the material from 50’s debut album “Get Rich or Die Tryin’.”
