Thumbs down

True, Billy, our teachers should be admired for sticking to their guns. In fact, they should be admired just because they have chosen a career that makes a difference in everyone's lives.

What's embarassing is our Governor. Both the professors and teachers unions had contracts that expired in 1999, and he had ample time to meet with both unions to negotiate, and perhaps the two strikes could've been avoided. It's embarassing that Hawaii is the only state in the union that hasn't had public education since April 9th.

Here's a governor that promised in his 1998 re-election campaign bid to make education his first priority. So far he's not living up to his promise. 200,000 students in lower and higher education lose every day. Parents spend extra money just to find child care. Some companies have even created their own childcare for their employees because we all know finding childcare doesn't come cheap. It broke my heart to see a mother in the news with tears on her face. She depends on the school lunch system for her 4 children and is having a hard time feeding her kids because they can't go to school. The unemployment line gets longer and longer every day that the strike goes on.

Accountants have done the math and have determined that there is enough money, but the Governor still refuses to give in. Now THAT'S an embarassment.
