Unfortunately, baseball is too much of a regional sport; mostly played in the US, Canada, the Caribbean and South America, Taiwan and Japan. It's virtually unknown (or unfamiliar) everywhere else in the world.
If I remember correctly, it was a demonstration sport in 1984 and 1988, became a medal sport in 1992, 1996 and 2000.

so my friends swear that they are going to win some competition that gets them to the next Summer Olympics - something about a Guinness competition for a marathon Olympics viewing?
I'm trying to find more info about it. But I'm already convinced they'll win - these are the two biggest slacker couch potatoes on the planet.

Since America always wins the World Series, I'm sure they'd win at the Olympics as well.

I'm looking forward to the Olympics this year! I just hope all goes well and we don't have another Munich incident. I do not know any of the competitors but I do know a few men who were deployed as part of the 400+ strong U.S. military task force to help provide security.

Found my answer. Google is a marvelous invention!
2006 Winter Games are in Turin, Italy
2008 Summer Games are in Beijing, China
2010 Winter Games are in Toronto
The front-runners for the 2012 Summer Games are as follows in the exact order that they appear to be as favorites.
Paris
London
Madrid
New York - I don't think they'll get them b/c the IOC is still pissed at us for bringing the Trade Center flag into the last games here in Salt Lake City. Besides, the U.S. has held the games many times in the last 20 years alone. Think L.A., Atlanta, Salt Lake City, etc.
Moscow
Toronto
Sao Paulo
Rio DeJaneiro
Leipzic
Havana

I'm pretty sure 2006 is in Torino, Italy and 2008 is in Bejing.
There was some good eye candy during the parade of nations last night I think I may have to watch some of those volleyball matches...
