Aah, I think you may be thinking of the Pioneer House/Frontier House/Manor House/etc. series from PBS/BBC. They take a group of people and have them live in whichever time period for several months.
They're really cool shows... you can tell what people can hack it and which ones are really spoiled (there's one in every show, it seems)
