Your father may not have known because I think that some Alphas have unofficially adopted the Ape as their mascot. Some chapters rock with it, others don't. You may wanna check with your father to see if they rolled with the "Ape" mascot back in the day.
The funny thing is here in DC, I more hear the ape "screech" than the "grunt."
