Your natural field of vision has an aspect ratio that is wider than 16x9 (1.78:1) sets, and much wider than 4x3 (1.33:1) sets. You're just used to the 4x3 sets.
As far as squished, that's probably from 16x9 sets using stertch modes for 4x3 programming. Most TV manufacturers use poorly implemented stretch modes. The only one that I've seen that gets it right is Loewe.
Most TV, that isn't live, is now produced widescreen. That means that you either watch it with black bars on the top and bottom, or that the sides (pan and scan) are chopped off, and you are not seeing the whole picture.
