Northern vs Southern Schools

Historically speaking, Madison, Wisconsin, is neither East Coast nor West Coast. It's the Third Coast.

My rush was more like a Souther rush than anything.

I was a program director for a non-profit with close ties to the US Department of Agriculture. We covered the Southern region of the US on behalf of the USDA. These states included: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, North Carolina, Maryland, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia. I feel safe in saying that Oklahoma is Southern.

ETA: I was in a hurry and forgot about Texas!

And as for her claim about the South funding our orgs, that's just ridiculous.

Overall, greek life in Oklahoma (and Texas) is more like that in the south, except for fraternity rush. Fraternities, at the larger greek systems in these states, definitely are unique in that they rush high school seniors, and grads, before their freshman year begins. They often move into the house as pledges. That type of recruitment is common in the great plains, and the western part of the midwest.

Basically, I think it's mostly personal. I would say that "the Midwest" covers the western half of Pennsylvania through Iowa. To some people who live out West, they consider Wisconsin to be "on the East Coast." To some people who live out East, they consider Wisconsin to be "on the West Coast."

Funny how it's all relative. People who came here from the East coast tend to call Colorado part of the midwest. People from the actual midwest (i.e. Iowa) think of it as western. Geography is all about who you're talking to.

This description from a favorite blog of mine pretty much says it all. Read the entry for August 24. It's hard to imagine a New York or Wisconsin mommy starring in this story...unless she was brought up in Georgia!

Damned straight. We have HS Seniors come through our formal rush sometimes. We treat them just as seriously as anyone else. We also start talking to them during their senior years. I even know of HS freshmen that have already made their minds up.

HS freshman? That sounds a little young. Are they legacies, or are there fraternities that recruit heavily from certain high schools?

Legacies and friends of legacies mostly.

We don't have them at our parties or anything. But when I substituted at their schools, they had free reign to walk out, roam the halls and do whatever they wanted.
