From a friend of mine who was roomies with a member of an NPHC group, I know that this is a tough decision. When I tried to recruit him, he was afraid his friends/roommate would disown him. It upset me because the guy had tons of potential.
It's good that your family and friends are supportive of you in this. Not everyone in the world is like that.
