Yes, we did see that, but there was no explanation in the movie as to WHY his Patronus is a stag. And that is a pretty important piece of information. So those who haven't read the book wouldn't understand the link between the Patronus and James, and they might not even realize that it IS a stag. I wouldn't have known what the heck it was if I hadn't read the book.
