It probably won't... everyone who would have ordinarily filled up today would have gotten gas yesterday or planned to buy it tomorrow. Total gas consumption won't change, just the day on which the gas was bought.
What
would help is if we picked a day on which to make a special effort to carpool, use public transportation, or telecommute.
Still, it's the thought that counts.
