My mom had to put Daisy to sleep today.

I saw her yesterday, and it was the right thing to do. She couldn't stand up, and wasn't eating or drinking. This morning she cried, and when my ran to her, she was on her side having a seizure.

My mom said that she'll rescue another Cairn, but its been a sad day for me.

My mom got Daisy in 1989. Sam, the mutt that I grew up with, was put to sleep at the age of 17. When my mom went to the vet to pay the bill, the vet offered Daisy, a homeless Cairn Terrier, to my mom for free. Another client of the vet gave it away. This woman, whom we don't know, owned two Doberman Pinchers. She was walking them one day when a scary looking, probably homeless man, said to her, "hey lady, you wanna buy a dog for $20?" She didn't really want another dog, but this was a scared, and emmaciated dog. She bought her to save her, and named her Daisy. Daisy soon gained her weight back, but it really wasn't fair to have this 12 pound Cairn in the same home as two fully grown Dobermins. Daisy terrorized them to the point where they were cowering in a corner all the time. Daisy's then owner hired a pet psychologist, and was told that nothing could be done. So, she gave Daisy to her vet.

A week after my mom was offered Daisy, she went to the vet, and picked her up. This was a happy dog. What my mom didn't realize was that Daisy wasn't her dog. My mom was Daisy's person. This is the way with Cairn's. They don't really bark for things, they act cute. Daisy would jump two feet up onto a couch, and prance onto your chest, and look at you nose-to-nose and smile. If you didn't react, she would lick you. It was time to be walked, or fed.

We were told that Daisy was about 2, but she could have been older. Its so sad to see a dog, who has been filled with so much life, enter her final years.

Soon after my mom got Daisy, a woman walked up to Daisy on the street, and started crying, almost uncontrollably. She had just put her Cairn to sleep, and she saw Daisy walking around like she owned the city. She missed her little dog with so much heart, that her heart grew to match that of the little terrier.

They are the best dogs.

*Hugs* I'm sorry about Daisy; it's hard to lose a dog you love so much. That was a lovely thing you wrote about her earlier.

If you had to see healthy puppies euthanzised everyday maybe you would understand-I think people should have to watch this. First they should have to play with the puppy for a few hrs, take it for a walk, get to know it and then watch it be put to sleep-is this sadistic-maybe but it is reality. I do it all the time.

ok off my soapbox, but this is a subject that is near and dear to my heart b/c I deal with it everyday.

Could I add my 2¢? If you really want a specific breed of dog, and none of the local shelters have them, please go online and read through the different AKC recommended "rescuers". My mama's Buffy is a rescued Bichon, and while he still has a quirk or two (you simply cannot hold up a newspaper in front of him - he cringes pitifully!), that little dog has brought much love to a hurting family.

Plus, rescued dogs are just so happy to be loved!!



Russ, I am so sorry to hear about your Daisy. Please accept my sympathy. Losing one's beloved pet is like losing a member of your family. God bless you.

Just had to add a pic of my cutie. His name is Spike. He is a Toy Fox Terrier. He is now 2 years old and full grown. He weighs about 10 pounds and isnt very big at all. He is a very good protector and very loving. Hes my angel lol.

My aunt's Bichon's are adorable but i little too much for me at times. But the most beautiful dogs i think!

Those Cairn Terriers are really cute too. I think the stuffed dogs I have from Victoria's Secret around Christmas are supposed to be those.

Omigosh, is he a cutie!!!!!!!

We tried to get angel wings on Buffy last year, but he wasn't very happy about it. And that's weird, because he likes his normal coats and sweaters!

My friend has a Min Pin and it is SOOOO HYPER that thing can jump like 3 feet in the air... if you're looking for a chill little dog this wouldn't be my choice...they are VERY cute and fun, no doubt... but not at all calm from what I've seen. I personally would go for a Lhasa Apsa (don't know if I spelled that right) They are fairly quiet and very loyal to the people they are around. My dad has one and she is the cutest thing EVER !! If I could I'd post a picture... alas... I've not figured out how to do that in my time on GC... maybe someday...

Female Lhasa Apsos are quieter...but the male ones can be very territorial and agressive. I wouldn't recommend them as a family pet unless you have a lot of time to invest in training both the dog and the children.

Here's my baby. Well actually she's not a baby, she turns 14 years old on the 19th, but she'll always be my baby. She's part Chihuahua and part Rat Terrier. She's a sweetie but not good with small children. (She used to hate me because I'd dress her up in baby clothes!)

I have 2 miniature dachsunds. One is a 13-lb male black and tan shorthair and the other is a 6-lb (fully grown) female dapple grey longhair. The male one, Rocky, is fantastic - very mellow temperment, doesn't bark much, and listens very well. The female, Sophie, is a complete princess and is very yappy and hyper. So, if you're going for a doxie, make sure you observe the puppy/dog before you get it, because they can be very different. Sophie was kind of a shock to us, since we had Rocky for about 5 years before we got her, and we thought she'd have a similar personality - boy, were we wrong! Also, they are very protective of their people and will freak out at the "attacker," even if you're just playing around. One great thing is that they don't shed at all, even the longhaired ones, so they are perfect for people with allergies. My mom is horribly allergic to dogs, and has had no problems with either of ours.
