They had apparently driven up for, and attended, a Zeta Phi Beta party in Columbia that night. They were supposedly on their way home and passed through Greek Town.

There you have it!

Who knows why they did it. But, I'll make an assumption and say stupid people do stupid things, regardless of their organizational affiliation.

They should chalk this up to stupid visitors and not let this influence their Greek climate on campus.

My random thoughts on the whole thing:
* Regardless of whether or not the Zeta Phi Betas were from Mizzou (or whether or not they just drove to Greek Town to cause trouble, or were just passing through and got "sidetracked"), what they did was in poor taste and did not represent their sorority in a positive way.

* In addition, I think the way the columnist worded her article is what made everyone upset. She probably still could have said what she wanted to, but maybe in a more eloquent way that wouldn't have offended so many people.

They did not drive up just to cause problems.

Texas Princess, I agree with you to the extent that the way the columnist worded her article made the problem a whole lot worse. But I'd say that the columnist should not only have chosen more eloquent language, she should have been prepared for the consequences (anger, demonstrations, etc.) when she expressed her contempt for NPHC organizations and their members. Yeah, she's a bad writer, but she did an excellent job of making her feelings clear in plain English.

The whole column, especially the last sentence with its reference to staying out of "our" little world, smacks of a desire to avoid contact with African-American students and to preserve segregation between black and white student groups. It's really hard to imagine an eloquent or respectful way that she could have expressed the idea that "I really don?t want them [NPHC] to be involved with our events." Even a mild whiff of that kind of closed-mindedness in a column would (justifiably) inspire disgust and protest among her fellow students...and this column stinks.

Well it doesn't seem like too many people at Mizzou agree with her so I think that she (the author, who BTW should take some journalism and english classes if writing is something she wants to do) should just sit in the hole she dug herself and should also think ALOT more before writing this type of stuff because she not only misrepresented the NPC orgs as a whole... but her chapter and org. as well.

Yes I definitely agree Glitter. I was glad that in the following articles that it was made clear that her views did not represent those of NPC and/or of her individual chapter.

IvySpice - Thank you for bringing that to my attention I just posted a quick reply to the original poster's question, so I unintentionally left out much of what I thought about the article. I completely agree with you when you say that she should have been prepared to take on the repercussions of her article and generalizing all NPHC orgs because of what a handful of members did. (**although I don't know of any other incidents on this campus or in the area, so please keep that in mind **)

I also agree that she did a poor job of reflecting not only on her sorority (while her comments were not made on behalf of the chapter, a following article did state her affiliation), but also of herself when she made the comments that she wanted to keep everyone in their own "little worlds".

It really makes me sad when stuff like this is still happening and also makes me glad that I attend a campus where everyone is included in philanthropies, Greek Week, and things like that regardless if they are NPC, IFC, NPHC, or MC/L GLOs.

I too, pretty much agree that the vandalism of the banners was
wrong and in poor taste, and I also agree that if something like that had happened when I was a collegian, I might have been a
*little* perturbed with the perpetrators of the vandalsim. I would also like to say that I have NEVER been embarrassed by one of my sisters before, but I guess there is a first time for everything. I really do hope that her chapter has some sort of discussion with her.

Since they were not from that campus, nothing I say is relevant.

At NCSU, all greek organizations are invited to participate in Greek Week and other events. very few BGLO participate, but a few more do every year. One event is a sorority/frat step thing, All the groups send two people and the BGLO teach them how to step and everyone performs.

The author of the article is very emotional and emotional people are hardly ever rational. don't knock her on grammar because you miss the point of the article. This group offended her and she does not understand why. Give her the benefit of the doubt that she was upset, not thinking clearly, and could not portray her thoughts in a better manner.

Also- When something like that happens, the head of the group usually has a long chat with the girls and then they usually have to apologize.

It goes beyond that. She wanted to attach the actions of those particular Zetas to the actions of the NPHC, specifically NPHC sororities. She also tried to draw a correlation between NPHC participation in events.

Beyond that, I agree with your post.
