Phi Beta Sigma Man, elected FIRST Black Mayor of Albany, GA
This is a momentous occasion, because of the racial history of Albany, GA. Albany, Georgia is the only place that Dr. King said he failed, read the book Parting the Waters in this book Dr. King talks about his time spent in Albany and the huge racial divide. WEB DuBois, talks about Albany/Dougherty County in his bookSouls of Black Folk which led to the finding of Albany State University an HBCU. I point this out to give an insight to the great significance of this proud moment. Whether he was a Sigma or not, this is a very proud moment, and because he is a Sigma Man, oh how sweet it is...

Here are the details...(Blue Phi!!!)

Albany- Three days after making history by soundly defeating ten-year incumbent Mayor Tommy Coleman, Dr. Willie Adams took the oath of office as Albany first black mayor.
The election was originally set for November, 2003, but was delayed after the local NAACP chapter sued to halt the vote. The Federal Court upheld their claim that voting districts were no longer properly drawn, since many residents had been displaced by the floods of 1994 and 1998.
Judge Willie Lockette administered the oath of office before a packed gallery at the Albany Government Building at 9:59AM. The event was broadcast live by WALB News-10.
Adams was swept into office with 60% of the vote, including substantial white voter support. Write-in candidate Marcia Felts-Wimberly got .3% of the votes, while incumbent Tommy Coleman got 39.7%. Coleman indicated that he has very likely run his last political race

Thank you for your correction regarding Dr. Adams' fraternal associations. Folks at home (I am from Albany) are VERY proud of him, as I am. I know this is probably TMI, but he was my Gynnie when I was in HS and college and his wife and my mom are friends.
Now of course if he could stop the siphoning of businesses and revenue from Albany to Lee County he would really be doing something!!
