That's interesting - I just had two of mine out on Friday, and I was told specifically NOT to rinse and change gauze frequently, especially the first day. I was told this would prevent clotting, induce more bleeding and possibly cause infection.
I wasn't knocked out - only given a local, which hurt in my lower tooth because I had a bad infection (the reason the teeth were extracted) and the gum was pretty swollen.
I've actually been ok - they gave me painkillers which have helped out a ton, but after the first day there's been no significant bleeding, if any at all. I've used a combo of ice and moist heat on the side of my face where it was done and have limited activity to lying on the couch. Things have been good and it looks like the teeth are healing pretty well.
I did have to have stitches in and will have them taken out this week; but so far so good. Slight pain but nothing more.
