Respectfully, bruh, I disagree.
IMO, most people in the U.S. care only about "politics" in its broadest sense, who'll best protect the nation? who'll make sure my kids have safe schools, who'll ensure the snow's removed in a timely fashion? etc... It's the much smaller passionate group, the "true believers" that care viscerally about shaping ideas and core political values that get involved in electoral/party politics.
I think that's why primary fights (R and D) are often so divisive; candidates have to pimp so hard to these "extremes" it's often too hard to get back to the broad American middle, where most people don't care all that much.
Were the percentages reversed, and more people were more passionate about political values, I think the "operation" or the parties would be better.
But that's just my take.
