Freaky Deer experience

Ok So I live in the country and was at my parent's house over the weekend and had a very unusual thing happen. We noticed that their dog, who is normally caged in a pen, was walking up the driveway. We went to put her back in the pen and I noticed a large dent in wall of the pen and a very large trail of blood from the side of the cage down the hill. It was almost like a horror movie. I followed the trail and came across a pile of intestines. Further down the hill I found a liver and then saw a very large (mostly eaten) buck carcass. It was very bloody and smelled or iron/blood. That night we heard a pack of coyotes right off the back of the house and the next morning everything was gone. EVERYTHING!! Intestines and all. The nest night we heard that the neighbor had a dog in a pen that when she went out to feed it all that was left was a head and 1 foot. A mountain Lion is sure attacking their neighborhood good!!

Are your parents keeping your dog inside now?? Please say yes....where is this that this mountain lion is attacking things. I have read about problems in northern california...just curious....

If us damn humans would stop building on all their habitat maybe they wouldn't be eating dogs and being so close to houses. Urbanization pays a big price on large carnivorous animals...but they are important to our ecosystems. (NOTE: I am a Conservation Studies Major- like Environmental Science- so this is my area of concern/expertise)

Just thought I would share.....

How do you know it was a mountain lion? Why was there a trail of blood between the deer and the dog pen? What does that have to do with a lion? I think the deer was injured after he ran into the pen and then went down the hill and died.

Her pen is topped so she is save. My parents tried bringing her inside but she is an out door dog and she goes crazy scratching at the door to get out. So My dad just made sure that her cage was safe. Yes we live in Northern California in Nevada County.

I agree with you on the habitat but where they live there is a 10-20 acres parcel minimum and their house was built in the 20's when 4 rocks was a good foundation to a house. They have never had an issue with Mountain Lions before but their neighbor said over the past six months the Mountain Lions have been picking off the calves and they also lost a couple small horses.

We can't be positive that it was a Mountain Lion but there are that many things that can move a large carcass that far. There is no way it would have hurt itself because once you loose that much blood and organs your can't move any further. The Carcass was drug from the pen to the creek by Mountain Lion. The only other thing that could have done it is coyotes and they are not quiet. They chatter and make a lot of noise. Fish and game has been out a couple of times in the past 6 months warning everyone with livestock. My parents don't have any so they never worried too much.

Just for your information (this is not meant to be offensive in anyway shape or form)

A professor of mine is writing a book about this mountain lion problem in Northern California, where he is from. The reason your parents and their neighbors are having more instances of sightings is simple...basically, as the surrounding areas grow further and further from city centers (like Sacramento) there roaming area is shrinking. So say a mountain lion needs 50 acres to survive and sustain their life. If we get rid of 500 acres there are 10 Mountain Lions that need new homes. They can't move into habitat that other mountain lions live in because of food shortages. Well this is where your parents come in. The mountain Lions can live off of the SAME 50 acres by eating your dog

or calves etc. The problem is where does the line draw....the human population is increading and we do need homes.

This is a really big issue in conservation. Part of the problem is that MOST americans want a single family home with a parcel of land and a white picket fence (I am guilty myself) when we SHOULD live in apartments to save "wild" lands. *sigh* this is starting to should way to much like the papers I am writing.

regardless, it sucks that your parents are having problems with mountain lions. Try to not supply them food by keeping your dog safe, have the neighbors put the cows in the barn. If you limit the food supply they will need to find a new place to live...the danger with this is they might start stalking people. We really just need to STOP moving to Sacramento....

but that will hurt animals elsewhere...

Ok enough of conservation psycho babble...I am just really passionate about all this stuff....if everyone else is aware of issues like this then maybe slowly people will realize EVERY little thing you do does have a great impact on the world and to be consious of it!

None taken!!! Like I said this area has not had growth in years. You don't want to get me started either because I am very passionate about all the people that keeping moving up to the area from the cities and building these monstrosities where they don't belong. After the dot-com fall people moved up to the area because they could sell their house in the bay and buy a nice house in the mountains. They are definately displacing lots of animals. Mostly deer!! Which is causing the sights because they are now forced into a habitat that they never were in before.

WOW, Wild animals found in Urban areas!

Deer Population in KC Metro Area is Huge. Opened Bow Hunting for them! Cause of Wrweaks killing Humans from hitting them! They are aaa Stupid!

KC Metro area, 2 Mountaian Lions, Pumas Hit buy Cars!

Wolves in KC Area, nope cant happen! Foxes, snakes, Possoms, Rabid Bat, Raccons, Rats? Dont beleieve it!

It is becomeing a War! The cute Bambie, Rocky Racoons, ETC!

US OR THEM!

Ok, I'm still worried about the dog. Seriously, how is safe? I'm really worried about this dog.

I would totally freak if I came outside to feed my baby and its head was laying there. OMG.....that lion whatever thing would be dead!

She is safe don't worry. Unless the mountain Lion grows an opposable thumb it won't be getting in.
