Back in the olden days in South Florida, there were fraternities and sororities in the high schools. It was not until 1970 that the Dade County Schools outlawed them, making it an expellable offense for students to belong to one.

One of the more famous high school fraternities in South Florida was Ching Tang, started in the 1920s at Coral Gables High School. Members called each other 'Chinks'. (Obviously this was well before political correctness and racial sensitivity was the norm.) Over 500 members were initiated over the fraternity's history, and about 150 are living today.

In 2001, the surviving members of the fraternity donated their records to the Historical Museum of South Florida.
