I never could figure out how clowns were supposed to be funny. When I was a kid and my parents would take us to the circus I was at first bored by the clowns and then annoyed by them as they tended to interrupt interesting performances and generally get in the way. Also, I couldn't figure out why anyone would want to set themselves up intentionally to be objects of ridicule. Why would anyone make a career out of looking and acting like a total idiot. I understand the role of the "fool" in the royal courts of the middle ages but I expect that role has now been assigned to network anchor persons. Sorry, I just find clowns pointless.

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at my school recently went to the circus. One teacher complained to the principal that she couldn't possibly go because she is afraid of clowns. The principal didn't make her go. Of course, her fellow teachers thought that was totally lame.

I thought about this thread and laughed myself silly.

Arrrgh, I had forgotten about my clown rant....I have to say it made me laugh a bit when I read it again here!

James....I am coming after you. Not nice to post that Pennywise picture!

Also--that Saturn ad with the clowns? Oh no, don't even start! Everytime I hear that music I have to run into the other room. It's horrible. And the worst part about it is that everytime I get up and run in the other room, my butthead husband starts laughing like it's the funniest thing he's ever seen. It's no good.

Also, that scene with the clown in Old School. No man, I can't watch that part. Which sucks, because I love it when Will Ferrell gets shot in the neck with the dart ("You're crazy man. I like you, but you're crazy.") I have to watch the whole scene with my hands in front of my face.

Also, my church used to have a "Clown Ministry," where they used a clown troupe to act out stories from the Bible. Trust me, seeing a clown crucified with a crown of thorns on his rainbow-wigged head is not something I wanted to see. I'd just read the hymnal for the duration of the little skit. People would be like, "Wasn't that special?" Ummmm....no. And I don't think Jesus would appreciate being portrayed by that hack with the big red lips and ridiculous shoes. And I'm pretty sure they didn't have suspenders and face paint back in the Biblical day.

Clowns suck. Can't we do without them???

ROTFLMAO that is simultaneously the funniest and the creepiest thing i have heard of - possibly ever. it's gonna take a lot to top that. a clown ministry? seriously? i mean i'm not that afraid of clowns, they're creepy and all, but good grief, a crucified clown Jesus? that would frighten the hell out of me.

eta: i just told this story to a friend of mine and now i have tears in my eyes

I think I just laughed so hard that I woke up my parents.

JAMES--I'M NOT EVEN SCARED OF CLOWNS AND I HATE YOU FOR THAT!!!

For real, I always loved clowns until I got to college and EVERY girl in my dorm was terrified of them. The phobia must be contagious because now, I'm not really scared, but they make me a little uneasy. I've never seen "It" and don't plan on it. And that's final.

AHA!

Research back up those afraid of clowns!

From Yahoo!

Don't Send In The Clowns

"Wed Jan 16, 8:32 AM ET

LONDON (Reuters) - Bad news for Coco and Blinko -- children don't like clowns and even older kids are scared of them.

The news that will no doubt have clowns shedding tears was revealed in a poll of youngsters by researchers from the University of Sheffield who were examining how to improve the decor of hospital children's wards.

The study, reported in the Nursing Standard magazine, found all the 250 patients aged between four and 16 they quizzed disliked the use of clowns, with even the older ones finding them scary.

"As adults we make assumptions about what works for children," said Penny Curtis, a senior lecturer in research at the university.

"We found that clowns are universally disliked by children. Some found them quite frightening and unknowable.""

Honestly, I've never understood the appeal of clowns, anyway. I can't say I was afraid of them, but I think I always thought they were a little ridiculous.

My church had a clown ministry, too! We didn't have crucified-clown Jesus, but the youth (the clown ministry members) often went to places around town to perform. I remember going to a retirement home in town to put on a show. We were getting ready to start the show, and we were lined up in a back hallway. An old lady came walking up, and apparently didn't know about the show. She started screaming bloody murder and hitting one of the guys with her cane. She started yelling, "Get the hell out of here, clown! You can't have my soul!" It was really bizarre.

OH MY LORD!

I thought that "Clown Ministry" would be something where church members dressed as clowns to visit hospital residents, sick children, invalids, nursing home residents, etc.

Using clowns to enact Bible stories is sick... and weird!
