This thread has helped me realize that the dolls I played with have probably caused me unknown psychological harm. I never had a Hispanic Barbie. Since my mother is from Spain, and I'm half Spanish, I am convinced that my playing with only White and African American Barbies has probably negatively effected my self esteem and world view. I played with White Barbies and African American Barbies, and to this day, I don't see the Caucasian as my enemy nor do I view the African American as being incapable. OMG! I actually remember that two of my black Barbies originally came as a teacher and a doctor. Most of my white Barbies were probably dumb blondes, and I never knew! If only I could have had a Barbie that represented me. Better yet, I should have had one of the Af-Am dolls lovelyivy84 spoke of whose life was filled with misery and pain. Perhaps then, I would better understand the world.
