My situation.....

I was asked to be the godmother of a "friend" of mines son while we were in high school...I agreed and my high school sweetheart was the child's godfather.......she had him while we were in 11th grade and I handled my duties as much as I could considering we were still in high school....I did take it seriously though. My high school sweetheart and I both joined the Air Force right after high school and we were both stationed in Hawaii....so of course I went from being able to see her son 2 or 3 times a week to 2 or 3 times a year (if that) but I sent money and gifts and called often........well 4 years later when I came back home to start college....our friendship (mine with my godson's mother) had changed...(and I wasn't with the high school sweetheart anymore)... she was still into the "wilding out" that we did in high school and I was a mature woman ready to begin to accomplish my life's dreams (becoming a doctor, becoming a Delta ). We were on totally different pages....I tried to become a part of his life again but I couldn't stand the way she was raising him...she cussed at him, hit him like he was a grown man...and basically wanted him to be a little thug....so maybe I was wrong but I stepped back from the situation.....I see him every now and then...I call and chat and if she really needs something she'll call me....I know it should be about the child but I know if something was to happen to her, her mother, sister, cousins, etc would never let me raise him anyway...if I had known then what I know now about the "TRUE" meaning of being a godparent then I wouldn't have accepted the invitation back then.....I am thankful I had my daughter when I was old enough to understand and appreciate the role of a god parent...my daughter has an excellent godmother and if I ever get the opportunity again it will be a decsion that I take to God first before I agree.....

My poor lil godson was still born. So I didn't really get a chance to experience the joys of god motherhood. However, BabyBlue91, I would have been heated had I been in your situation. I cannot stand UNGRATEFUL people. I used to be friends with this girl and her daughter had a birthday party, do you know she had a negative comment about every gift but mine. Only because I got exactly what the girl wanted, but what if I couldn't get it and it was a different brand as with you??? Some of these parents make it seem like you are the godparent for them and not the child.

What I would have done was what you did and buy a gift certificate and let her shop for her own child or not give them anything at all. It is really unfortunate that the child gets caught up in this drama. I agree with AKA2D'91, make her aware that she has offended you, because her actions were definitely trifling.

Well I"m 20 now and my godson is 17 months. I do all that I can to help out his mom (of course his dad hasnt seen him since january ) . I take him to the doctor when she's busy; pick him up from day care; babysit. Whatever she needs me to do...of course she is one of my bestest friends. Recently Ive been spending thursday evenings with him every week. Since I dont see him everyday I want him to recognise me and smile when he sees me. I just want him to know me. And he's the cutest thing when I get him from day care he's there playing with his friends and laffing. It's sooo weird that the simplest things give them pleasure.

Thumbs up

My godson is the son of my best friend. He was born at 1 lb 3 1/2 ounces. He will be a year old in a few weeks and has had countless surgeries.
(To read more about him, go to http://www.newstimesonline.com/stori...151-6393.shtml)
I take my responsibility very seriously. A godparent is a person who is a gift from God to the child if anything should happen to the parents or if there is something that the child needs that the parents cannot provide. Elijah had a 24 hour nurse, and now he has 12 hour nursing. In October, when I go to GA for his birthday, his mother will start to train me on how to care for him should anything happen to her. I feel honored to have the responsibility.

She is the godmother for my child as well. She is wonderful to him, and still calls and checks on him even though she has a huge responsibility with her own child. I hate to hear that people have godparents who are uninvolved.

Me, I don't have any.

Oh and...

I told my fiance that if anything happens to Carla, that Elijah could very well become a part of our family (he knows about the surgeries the care and all that)... he told me that he didn't expect anything else and had no problems with it.

I LOVE THAT MAN!
