The same is true (you would only be able to be a member of one NPC) if you AI with a NPC group AFTER the local affliates with a different NPC group after you leave. As an alumna of the local you get to choose whether to affiliate with the new colony or not.
You will always be an alumna of ABC whether you affiliate with QRS or not.
Hope that did cause TOO much confusion!
